The New Architecture of Qatar (Hardback)

    Philip Jodidio

    • £44.00
    • RRP £55.00
    • Save £11.00
The contemporary architecture of Qatar includes some of the world's most innovative commissions built in the past twenty years. This is the most comprehensive publication on the stunning new architecture of Qatar, highlighting more than fifty projects. A small, oil- and gas-rich Gulf country, Qatar has undergone a major transformation since the early 1980s. Fifty years ago, Doha, the capital of Qatar, was a small town built on Gulf commerce, fishing, and pearl diving. That began to change with the rise of the oil economy and the urban growth that resulted. The process accelerated during the global economic boom, creating an entirely new skyline in the West Bay area of Doha, and has continued apace since. Qatar's landscape is dotted with structures designed by some of the most famous architects in the world, from the Doha Tower by Jean Nouvel, to the Museum of Islamic Art by I. M. Pei and Weill Cornell Medical College by Arata Isozaki. Situated in Education City, just outside of Doha, are buildings for American universities such as Carnegie Mellon University, designed by Ricardo Legorreta, a world-class hospital by Cesar Pelli, buildings by Rem Koolhaas such as the Qatar National Library, and the Al Shaqab Equestrian Academy--a riding venue located in the heart of Education City. The Emir of Qatar, his wife, Sheikha Moza, and his daughter, Sheika Al Mayassa, plan to make Qatar the cultural heart of the new Middle East with an architectural heritage to match.

    Phantom (Hardback)

    Tim McLelland

    • RRP £55.00
    • Save £11.00
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom is perhaps the best known and most popular of all postwar military aircraft. Its extremely long and diverse history, the huge variety of roles it has undertaken and its international appeal - most notably with the US and UK - makes it incomparable with any other aircraft. When it first emerged towards the end of the 1950s, it represented a generational step from the first postwar jets and later 'Century Series' aircraft, to the modern high-tech fighters such as the F-16. The Phantom was the most significant aircraft to serve with the US Navy and Marine Corps, and the US Air Force. It was also the most numerous and significant aircraft type to participate in the Vietnam War. Apart from being an iconic US aircraft it was also a hugely successful international design and was purchased by the UK, Australia, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. This detailed new volume provides an in-depth, comprehensive study of the development of the F-4 Phantom, tracing its full service deployment from the USAF and RAF to the air forces of a host of countries around the globe. The author also covers in detail the long and complicated story of the British Phantom. Purchased for both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, it became a much-respected carrier-borne fighter-bomber. It provided the RAF with a nuclear strike aircraft and a ground attack/reconnaissance platform, and later became the RAF's standard interceptor.

In 1949, the photographer Lucien Herve took photographs of Unite dHabitation, an innovative apartment building in Marseille, France. He sent them to the building's architect, Le Corbusier, who immediately realised that after forty years of searching he had finally found a photographer with an architect's soul. Their seminal collaboration is extensively documented in this album of 1200 cardboard sheets of Herve's carefully edited, sequenced and labelled contact prints, housed at the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris. Originating as a vehicle for dissemination of the architect's work and as a commercial venture for the photographer, these contact sheets now form an extraordinary archive of modernist architecture and photography in the mid-twentieth century.

Libby Day was just seven years old when her older brother massacred her family while she hid in a cupboard. Her evidence helped put him away. Ever since then she has been drifting, surviving for over twenty years on the proceeds of the 'Libby Day fund'. But now the money is running out and Libby is desperate. When she is offered $500 to do a guest appearance, she feels she has to accept. But this is no ordinary gathering. The Kill Club is a group of true-crime obsessives who share information on notorious murders, and they think her brother Ben is innocent. It is 2 January 1985 - the day of the murders. Ben is a social misfit, ground down by the small-town farming community in which he lives. His family is extremely poor, and his father Runner is violent, gambles and disappears for months on end. But Ben does have a girlfriend - a brooding heavy metal fan called Diondra. Through her, Ben becomes involved with drugs and the dark arts. When the town suddenly turns against him, his thoughts turn black. But is he capable of murder? In a brilliantly interwoven plot, Gillian Flynn keeps the reader balanced on a knife-edge, as Libby delves into her family's past and Ben spirals towards destruction.
