    Market Risk Analysis (Hardback)

    Carol Alexander

    • RRP £52.00
    • Save £10.40
Written by leading market risk academic, Professor Carol Alexander, Practical Financial Econometrics forms part two of the Market Risk Analysis four volume set. It introduces the econometric techniques that are commonly applied to finance with a critical and selective exposition, emphasising the areas of econometrics, such as GARCH, cointegration and copulas that are required for resolving problems in market risk analysis. The book covers material for a one-semester graduate course in applied financial econometrics in a very pedagogical fashion as each time a concept is introduced an empirical example is given, and whenever possible this is illustrated with an Excel spreadsheet. All together, the Market Risk Analysis four volume set illustrates virtually every concept or formula with a practical, numerical example or a longer, empirical case study. Across all four volumes there are approximately 300 numerical and empirical examples, 400 graphs and figures and 30 case studies many of which are contained in interactive Excel spreadsheets available from the the accompanying CD-ROM . Empirical examples and case studies specific to this volume include:* Factor analysis with orthogonal regressions and using principal component factors;* Estimation of symmetric and asymmetric, normal and Student t GARCH and E-GARCH parameters;* Normal, Student t, Gumbel, Clayton, normal mixture copula densities, and simulations from these copulas with application to VaR and portfolio optimization;* Principal component analysis of yield curves with applications to portfolio immunization and asset/liability management;* Simulation of normal mixture and Markov switching GARCH returns;* Cointegration based index tracking and pairs trading, with error correction and impulse response modelling;* Markov switching regression models (Eviews code);* GARCH term structure forecasting with volatility targeting;* Non-linear quantile regressions with applications to hedging.

    The Treasury Bond Basis (Hardback)

    • Save £10.40
This is the essential, updated guide to profiting and hedging using the 'basis,' from two top authorities on futures research. Since it was first published in 1989, "The Treasury Bond Basis" has grown to become a mandatory reference book for every professional trader of treasury bond and note futures. An insightful analysis of the complex relationship between the cash market and futures market for treasury bonds and notes, its information and influence have helped thousands of hedgers, speculators, and arbitrageurs to understand and profit from that relationship. The third edition of this indispensable reference reflects numerous changes in the market in the decade since the second edition, including: updated explanations of valuing the short's delivery alternatives; new discussions of global bond futures trading and applications for portfolio managers; and, new illustrations, examples, and case studies covering every aspect of the bond basis. In the two decades-plus since the introduction of bond futures, fluctuations in the T-bond basis have supplied consistent opportunities for hedgers and traders. "The Treasury Bond Basis" explores in detail how those opportunities have changed, and provides trading professionals with the updated knowledge and techniques to profit from, and manage exposure to, constantly occurring interest rate fluctuations.Securities dealers and financial institutions that buy, sell, or hold Treasury bonds and notes invariably participate in the futures market. The key to effectively managing positions in both the futures and cash markets lies in understanding the nature of the price differential between the futures price and prices of the underlying issues. This differential is the 'basis'. "The Treasury Bond Basis, Third Edition" provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the relationship between these two markets. While the basic outline of "The Treasury Bond Basis" remains unchanged, this seminal book has been expanded, updated, and substantially rewritten to reflect how treasuries are traded today, including: basic tools needed for understanding the bond basis, from futures contract specifications to sources of profit in a basis trade; a complete description of the short's strategic delivery options and how they can be valued; and, best alternatives for hedging with treasury futures, including creating synthetic bonds, option-adjusted DV01s, and more. This title includes: a menu of basis trades, including selling expensive bases, buying cheap bases, buying or selling 'hot-run' bases, trading the calendar spread, and trading RP special effects; and, strategies for putting together volatility arbitrage trades when futures seem to be mispriced. Nine eras of the bond basis that have shaped both its pricing and the ways the contract is used. An introduction to key non-dollar futures contracts - how they are structured, how they relate to respective cash markets, and trading themes in European markets is presented. This book contains applications for using futures to manage duration and yield curve exposure and enhance returns on bond portfolios. Long valued as the essential reference on treasury futures, "The Treasury Bond Basis" continues to provide investment and risk managers, institutional investors, securities dealers, and arbitrageurs with a clear and concise framework of the concepts and mechanisms underlying the treasury bond basis.

    Agnes Varda (Hardback)

Over nearly sixty years, Agnes Varda (b. 1928) gave interviews that are revealing not only of her work, but of her remarkably ambiguous status. She has been called the "Mother of the New Wave" but suffered for many years for never having been completely accepted by the cinematic establishment in France. Varda's first film, La Pointe Courte (1954), displayed many of the characteristics of the two later films that launched the New Wave, Truffaut's 400 Blows and Godard's Breathless. In a low-budget film, using (as yet) unknown actors and working entirely outside the prevailing studio system, Varda completely abandoned the "tradition of quality" that Truffaut was at that very time condemning in the pages of Cahiers du cinema. Her work, however, was not "discovered" until after Truffaut and Godard had broken onto the scene in 1959. Varda's next film, Cleo from 5 to 7, attracted considerably more attention and was selected as France's official entry for the Festival in Cannes. Ultimately, however, this film and her work for the next fifty years continued to be overshadowed by her more famous male friends, many of whom she mentored and advised. Her films have finally earned recognition as deeply probing and fundamental to the growing awareness in France of women's issues and the role of women in the cinema. "I'm not philosophical," she says, "not metaphysical. Feelings are the ground on which people can be led to think about things. I try to show everything that happens in such a way and ask questions so as to leave the viewers free to make their own judgments." The panoply of interviews here emphasize her core belief that "we never stop learning" and reveal the wealth of ways to answer her questions. T. Jefferson Kline, Brookline, Massachusetts, is professor of French at Boston University. He is the author of several books, including Unraveling French Cinema: From L' Atalante to Cache, and he is coeditor of Bernardo Bertolucci: Interviews (University Press of Mississippi).

For more than a half a century, James Hart's Oxford Companion to American Literature has been a matchless guide through the myriad paths and byways of American literary culture. It has been revised regularly since its first publication in 1941, although Hart died in 1990, before he could complete this new edition. The experienced reference book editor Phillip Leininger has completed the revisions for the sixth edition of this classic work . Nearly 200 new entries range from major new literary talents (Don Delillo, Thomas Flanagan, William Kennedy, Cormac MacCarthy) to playwrights and theatre people (Harvey Fierstein, John Guare, Stephen Sondheim, August Wilson), and science fiction and popular authors (Raymond Carver, Stephen King, Harold Robbins, Theodore Sturgeon). Many more entries have been expanded to take account of work written since the publication of the last edition (Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike). Leininger has also endeavoured to widen the scope of the book by adding entries on women (M. F. K. Fisher, Ursula Le Guin, Bobbie Ann Mason, Gloria Steinhem), as well as African Americans, Native Americans, and other ethnic groups. The Companions Chronological Index includes new literary and social notes that bring it right up to date. While there are a number of reference works dealing with American literature, none of them have the stature and authority of the Oxford Companion, a delight for both the casual browser and the serious student.

Susie Moran is a success. She has founded and run her own highly profitable company, and now her three daughters are all involved in the business. Rooted in the traditions of the Stoke-on-Trent potteries, and producing charming, useable objects of distinctive design, Susie is justly proud of her family and her achievement - and has no intention of letting it change.

But what of the men in the family? Susie's husband, a musician and artist, has always seemed happy to take a back seat. One of her sons-in-law has few ambitions outside the home. Another daughter, though, has brought her husband into the company - and they want to change things, much to Susie's distress.

And then, into the mix, arrives Susie's father, an ageing hippy who abandoned Susie as a baby. Now he's alone, and wants to build bridges, although Susie's daughters are outraged at the idea. Can the needs of a family business override the needs of the family itself? In wanting to preserve her business, will Susie lose something much more precious?

Harnessing recent developments in computer technology, the latest New Naturalist volume uses the most up-to-date and accurate maps, diagrams and photographs to analyse the diverse landscapes of Scotland. Most people share an enthusiasm for beautiful and breathtaking scenery, explored variously through the physical challenge of climbing to the top of the tallest mountains or the joy of viewing the work of a painter; but while easy to admire from a distance, such landscapes are usually difficult to explain in words. Peter Friend highlights the many famous and much loved natural landscapes of Scotland, ranging from the rolling, agricultural lowlands of the east to the wild and rugged mountains of the west, from the whitewashed villages of Galloway to the traditional fishing ports of the east. He provides detailed explanations for the wide variety of natural events and processes that have caused such an exciting range of surroundings. Setting apart the topography that has resulted from natural rather than man-made occurrences, Friend focuses on each region individually, from the windswept islands that fringe the Atlantic to the sheltered straths of Perthshire, and explains the history and development of their land structures through detailed descriptions and colourful diagrams. Illustrated with beautifully detailed photographs throughout, Scotland comprehensively explores the formation of these wonderful landscapes that are so universally admired.
