Molly Keane was widely heralded as the mistress of wicked comedy as her observations were so deliciously accurate and her humour decidedly black. The five wickedly sharp stories in this collection are riveting and the elegant writing fits perfectly as sadness and pathos lie close to the glittering surface. The books include the likes of Time After Time and Devoted Ladies and contain some extremely cleverly conceived characters. Although the books will make you chuckle and laugh out loud, there are also genuine shocks and twists that were her trademarks throughout every story.

These novels are just wonderful. Set amongst the Irish aristocracy during the early part of the 20th century they are beautifully written and paint a vivid picture of the time and the upper classes that they portray - the good and the bad. They are both funny and poignant and all of the characters are incredibly likfelike. Style wise, Molly Keane reminds me of Evelyn Waugh or F Scott Fitzgerald and I believe she truly is an underrated writer. Every one is a winner and they are such fantastic value - the only problem was that this was not a larger collection.
