The three riveting books in this set - Unexplained Laughter, The Birds of the Air and The Inn at the Edge of the World - are all critically acclaimed and contain complex, farcical plot lines. Every novel is also full of beautifully drawn characters and hilarious situations. Having stood the test of time, the books in this introductory set deserve to be read, recommended and shared. Ellis's books are engaging, laugh-out-loud funny and incredibly intelligent.

Disappointing as novels -
I agree with the previous reviewer that these books are disappointing and only mildly amusing in places at best. I felt they would have worked better as drama as they reminded me of an Alan Ayckbourn-style play.

Over-hyped and disappointing -
I was looking forward to reading these books as I very much enjoy farce and black comedy. However, I failed to find it in any of these three stories. There were intermittent pages of witty dialogue and observation but the lauded complexities were very much lacking. Ditto wry and characterful situations - painful and cluttered in abundance though.
I wasn't riveted; in fact, I struggled to finish each book but was determined to soldier on to the end. A great book really doesn't present that much of a hardship.
Of the three books, The Inn at the Edge of the World had the edge but sadly I really wouldn't recommend this set to anybody.
