In this collection, Bernard Knight combines his 40-year career as a Home Office pathologist - during which he performed over 25,000 autopsies - with an encyclopedic knowledge of the 12th century to deliver an immensely gripping series of medieval thrillers that will appeal to all fans of the murder mystery genre. Featuring Crowner John, Devon's first county coroner, the series twists and turns through a range of malicious murders and sinister threats and set against an incredibly authentic backdrop, the plots quickly absorb the reader and leave them guessing to each satisfyingly unexpected ending. This collection will certainly provide enough fuel to feed the addiction of a murder mystery fan throughout the long dark winter!

I wasn't looking for an academic study - just a good series of thrillers. Each book has a Glossary of medieval terms used within each book (and its contents differ from book to book) and this does help as the terms are used to lend authenticity rather than using 'olde Englishe'. The first book in the series (The Sanctuary Seeker) seems a little heavy at the start as the overall scene and style is set, but it hardly detracts from the story. (Clearly, this is a personal view - others more academic than I will probably disagree). Book 2 (The Poisoned Challice) simply flows from page 1, as do the others in the series. In total, an excellent set of stories written by somebody who appears to have a sound techical knowledge which he uses cleverly to enhance the story rather to over-power the reader.
