Her Fearful Symmetry (Paperback)

Audrey Niffenegger

Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical 'mirror' twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them her flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin ...but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twins' mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat. Her Fearful Symmetry is a uniquely compelling novel from Audrey Niffenger, the author of The Time Traveler's Wife.

"Haunting" -

I relly enjoyed this book, and agree with other reviewers - I couldn't put it down. The fact is though that it's the author's style of writing that flourishes, and not, on this occasion, the story. As it progresses you get a real hatred of the characters. There's no-one to warm to, and you're left wondering why you cared for 3/4 of the book.Couldn't give it 5 stars because in all honesty, its not a patch on Time Traveller's Wife, but I enjoyed it, and would absolutely go out of my way to read her next book, as I did to read this one.

"Her Fearful Symmetry" -

I admit I couldn't put it down but wasn't sure how I was supposed to feel about the characters. I didn't really like any of them by the end, except maybe OCD Martin. I wouldn't put anyone off reading it. I thought it was a feel good book right up to the last 10th. I saw the soul switch coming a mile off and the real mother plot too, but I still can't say I never enjoyed it.

"Disappointing" -

Having enjoyed 'The Time Traveller's Wife,' I was keen to read this. It started off with quite an interesting idea, but gradually became more and more ridiculous, until the ending was just ludicrous. The descriptions of Highgate Cemetery were interesting and actually made me want to visit it myself. However, the characters were mostly unpleasant and I didn't really care what happened to them. A real disappointment and not worth reading.

"Her Fearful Symmetry" -

This was one of those books you just can't put down. An intelligent ghost story that is gripping, but not scary, with an unexpected twist and a moral which gives you something to think about. It also gives the reader who is interested in history an interesting insight into Highgate Cemetry.
