This marvellous eight-book collection showcases some of her strongest work, including classics such as Death at the Opera and The Saltmarsh Murders. The creator of polymathic psychoanalyst Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, better known as Mrs Bradley, these books are sure to delight anyone with an interest in crime thrillers and also offer strong views on the society of the time in which they were written.

Add reviewThe great Gladys -
I love reading Gladys Mitchell's stories. Many are out of print, and the reprints were not done in great numbers so this collection at a bargain price was a real welcome deal and a surprise. Mitchell's books might not be quite as immediately accessible as other similar books such as those by Christie or Sayers. Her heroine is a remarkable creature with her crocodile grin and unwholesome cackle. Most books have a wide range of characters, some pretty odd. Like the best golden age detective fiction we have lots of clues to piece together. You can just read and enjoy, or if you want to work hard to work out the mystery before the denoument, in the best old fashioned detective story tradition. Vintage, who publish these reprints are reprinting a large number of further titles next year - including some that are impossible to find otherwise - Book People - PLEASE bring us a new collection of these books!

Didn't excite me. -
I eagerly awaited this collection of books as I had watched the TV series years ago. However I didn't enjoy them and I'm not sure why. I struggled to read two of them and then donated them to the library.

"Really lovely books" -
Gladys Mitchell was an exceptional writer. On par with Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers etc. I can't believe I haven't discovered her beautifully written books before! I won't be happy until I have read the lot! A big thank you to the Book People for introducing her to me.

"Better than expected" -
I am working my way through these little gems. They are well written and carefully plotted. I also like the notes at the end showing Mrs Bradley's detective process. AS good as anything from that era.

"Brilliant! Gladys Mitchell" -
I had never heard of this author. I saw the collection and wanted some holiday reading so bought it. I cannot put the books down. Very well written and captures the reader from the first page. The plots are very good and very well thought out. Keeps the reader guessing. Cannot wait for more of the books to come on sale.

"Strange but Great" -
I bought this collection thinking it would be like the Mrs Bradley televison series that was televised a few years ago. It is not at all, as the stories are much darker and stranger, but totally engaging; I can't put the books down! Each one also includes Mrs Bradley's notebook so you can see what clues appeared in which chapters and how she worked everything out. Gladys Mitchell wrote over 60 Mrs Bradley stories so I do hope TBP will be selling some more collections. As some of the stories refer to characters in earlier cases, it would be great if the collections could contain the books in order & I would be particularly interested to read the first one where Mrs Bradley is introduced to the reader! If you are a fan of Agatha Christie, like period crime dramas that are well written with thoroughly good stories where it is hard to guess who did it, then these are the books for you!

"Gladys is a Pip..!" -
All-but forgotten is this marvellous writer of the 30s, Gladys Mitchell. I'd purchased one of her books from another source previously, so when the opportunity arose to buy this collection, I was very pleased to do so. Great fun if you enjoy an earlier age of crime detection. Herrings - red or otherwise - are nicely scattered throughout the story; period detail is nicely done, and justice always prevails at the end.
