I first read this to my son when he was two and a half, he is now nearly four and still loves it. It works on more levels than many of the Dr. Seuss books and is especially good if you "do the voices". The characters provide more than just a framework around which a rhyme can be hung, from the thoughtless Once-ler to the righteously indignant Lorax they are devel. It charts the deforestation of an area of beauty and the impact on all the wildlife that live there - a heavy subject for tots but so charmingly told that at two my son loved the rhymes and pictures and at nearly four it is actually helping him to understand environmental responsibility. Quite a feat. It is hard to believe that this book was written thirty years ago as it is so very relevant for now.
