I own a few of these books and they're excellent, some of the most useful, informative, comprehensive reference books I own. Just the right balance of text and photos, really detailed and useful. Just wish I'd known about them before I bought them!

An informative collection that's a joy to read. -
This collection provides a wonderful reference tool to all things foody. If the provenance of your food is important to you and you have a love of cooking food from scratch, then this is the book for you. I particualrly enjoy the way in which the books are written, they have different styles on account of the different "voices" coming from the authors. If you are looking for something purely written by HFW than this is not for you (try Veg Everyday - another RC winner) but in my opinion the collection is even better for it. Each handbook is contentiously written by the resident expert in a style that is accessible and a joy to read.

Superb Collection -
If you only use two of these books, this collection would be worth getting. 'Bread' explains the whole process so you can't go wrong and has excellent recipes. It is the best bread book I own - and I have many. 'Cake' and 'Preserves' have good choices of different sorts to prepare. 'Hedgerow', 'Seashore' and 'Mushrooms' give you good pictures and recipes so you can safely forage and cook free food. 'Veg Patch' and 'Fruit' tell you how to grow and use the same. I would never go sea fishing but what is one book out of such a brilliant collection? I have already bought two sets as presents as they are everything a cook will ever need and come beautifully presented in a sturdy library box.

Love River Cottage -
I have been eyeing up some of the River Cottage Handbooks for some time but thought they were quite expensive. This is amazing value for money even if there are a couple of titles I did not want nor will use - however I have a friend who would like those so he can have them & I'll be in his good books.
