I am a great fan of Gervase Phinn’s tales of his days as a school inspector in Yorkshire and this novel has a similar style and use of language. The author has a real knack for picking up out a characterful child and has done so again in the book, as I am sure the three stars, Oscar, James and Danny are based on real children. And anyone who has ever worked in a school will recognise the caretaker with the bad back, the put-upon secretary and the new-broom head teacher. All these characters hold together a slightly thin if well worked storyline and make for a very enjoyable read.
