Orange Prize for Fiction winner announced

American author Madeline Miller has won this year’s Orange Prize for Fiction award with her debut novel The Song of Achilles. Miller wins a £30,000 prize and the ‘Bessie’, a limited edition bronze figurine, for her success. The Song of Achilles is a love story focussing on the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles in the midst of the Trojan War. Miller said she was “overwhelmed, humbled and so grateful” after receiving the news she was the winner.

Joanna Trollope, Chair of Judges, said about the book: “This is a more than worthy winner – original, passionate, inventive and uplifting. Homer would be proud of her”.

2012 marks the seventeenth year of the Orange Prize, which celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing from throughout the world. The Book People has all six shortlisted titles available for just £20 here.

With the summer sun shining and extended bank holiday coming up, we’ve been thinking ahead to the half term and summer break. Jeff Kinney’s illustrated books are brilliant – the life of Greg Heffley is hilariously told through a series of journal entries and family, friendship and school humour are all mixed brilliantly. A great read for reluctant readers. Billy Bonkers will appeal to children aged 7 and above and the three books tell all about the crazy adventures young Billy and his family go on. Very funny stories for boys!
