The Book People’s picks of 2013

Talking about books is what we do best and as the end of the year draws closer we thought now would be the perfect time to share with you some of our highlights from 2013.

We’ve picked the books that have been stand-out reads for us here at the Book People HQ over the past 12 months alongside bestsellers that you, our lovely customers, have bought on mass too – so much so that we couldn’t keep them on the shelves of our warehouse long enough to ensure everyone could take home a copy.

Our very own in-house Spielberg has directed this short video with the Book People team to share with you what pages we’ve loved turning this year. Enjoy!

Still need convincing? Here’s why we loved them so much…

Recipe for Life by Mary Berry
Sophie:
“Is there anyone anywhere who doesn’t love Mary Berry? Totally readable and what an insight into an incredible woman… Inspiring from start to finish, and great for passing on to my mum and sisters after!”

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Rachael:
“Gripping, tense and with an incredible twist – what more could you want from a thriller? If you love this as much as me, read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn too (but not alone… or in the dark…!)”

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory
Emma:
“I loved the BBC series so decided to read the book after a friend highly recommended it – it’s even better! Amazing detail, believable characters and really pacy. “

A Short Book About Drawing by Andrew Marr
Mark:
“This may seem like a bizarre book but it’s incredibly interesting and really entertaining, I pinched a copy floating round the office and couldn’t put it down.”

Demon Dentist by David Walliams
Holly:
“David Walliams has done it again – another laugh-out-loud story with some real heart.”

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell
Claire:
“With a more humorous style than any of O’Farrell’s previous work, this Costa Novel Award-shortlisted book is full of memorable moments.”

Proper Pub Food by Tom Kerridge
Seb:
“The dishes in this cookbook were not only delicious, but also ever-so-simple to prepare – perfect for the likes of myself!”

For him:

Thanks to his successes in both the Tour de France and the Olympics, Bradley Wiggins became one of the nation’s heroes in 2012, and is surely in the running for the Sports Personality of the Year award. You can relive the popular mod’s incredible summer with Allez Wiggo!, a photographic celebration of all his races and victories. Another fascinating read for sports fan is popular golf legend Sam Torrance’s autobiography Out of Bounds: Tales From the 19th Hole, this is a read full of enthusiasm, informative insights and entertaining anecdotes.

The star of Peep Show and a regular on the likes of QI, David Mitchell’s autobiography, Back Story is a fascinating and funny read that tells all about his life and how he is most definitely not David Mitchell the novelist! Jeremy Clarkson also has a new book out and this time he looks back over The Top Gear Years, and describes how a show filmed in an ex-RAF aerodrome in Surrey has become a worldwide sensation. Another hit BBC show is Andrew Marr’s A History of the World and in the tie-in book, he reveals some of the traditional epic stories that show how our understanding of the world’s history changes as new discoveries are made.

For her:

Paula Wolfert’s The Food of Morocco is the definitive book on Moroccan cuisine and features over 200 authentic recipes for delicious food, all with clear instructions and detailed notes. The Anti-ageing Beauty Bible is packed with insider info on how to look, feel and be fabulous forever. The book contains chapters that include guidance on skin, hair, make-up, hands, feet, nails, exercise, sleep and so much more!

Call The Midwife was a television success story and this keepsake hardback edition of Jennifer Worth’s memoir is beautifully illustrated and brings to life the true story of the East End of London in the 1950s. Jackie Collins is also back with another novel packed with sex, power and intrigue called The Power Trip. A Russian billionaire invites five couples to stay on board his luxury yacht. Will it end up being the trip of a lifetime?
