Week of Wonder the Book People

Hand-picked for you this Christmas…

Christmas, like for many businesses, is the Book People’s busiest time of year and remembering our first discussion of December plans in an overheated meeting room back in July seems like a distant memory with our Christmas Shop and festive Week of Wonder now in full swing. But with just 40-odd days to go until the big day, our offers will be snowballing out to you over the next few weeks, and before you know it, Christmas will be here.

Any excuse to don a Christmas jumper and eat a mince pie in October is fine with us, and we’re delighted to finally share with you our Book People Christmas video, exclusive to our YouTube channel. It may not star a bear and a hare, the beautiful tones of Lily Allen, or quite move you to tears, but we hope it’ll put a smile on your face and help you feel ready for the holidays that await next month. You’ll find all the books featured on our website and we hope it provides you with plenty of inspiration for those gifts you still need to buy…

While filming we began reminiscing about our favourite Christmas memories. Here are just some of the Book People Ecommerce team’s recollections…

“My brother, sister and I would always be up at 5am (at least) on Christmas Day, ready for a mammoth present-opening spree! I remember getting a Mega Drive one year and the best Turtles, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park toys! I also vividly recall having Christmas stories read to me by my parents in the lead-up, a favourite of which was A Christmas Carol – possibly enhanced by my enjoyment of The Muppets Christmas Carol, a film that I still watch every Christmas Eve, even now!”
Ryan, Book People Editor

A Christmas Carol

“One of my fondest Christmas memories is unwrapping a Disney Simba cuddly toy (from the Lion King) when I was seven years old. I was obsessed with the film and book and spent the whole day roaring and scampering around on all fours. I still have Simba some 20 years later – a fact that my parents regularly like to remind me of!”
Claire, Senior Online Marketing Executive

“Like it was yesterday, I remember being curled up on the sofa reading Mr Tickle with one of my nieces. She’s all grown up now and getting a couple of cookbooks from me this year!”
Karen, Direct Marketing Manager

10-book Mr Men Activity Set

“One of my most recent Christmas memories is my family’s first Christmas without my sister being at home since moving to Thailand (which I’m pretty sure she loves a lot more than being in the UK at winter time!). We all sat round our dinner table for Christmas lunch and Skyped her to see her celebrating Christmas Day with friends in a bar on the beach! It was so good to see what a fantastic time she was having, and Santa hats always look great on people sporting enviable tans and swimwear!”
Oliver, Online Marketing Executive

“My mum and I flew out to Sydney to visit my aunt and uncle for Christmas and New Year back in 2005. It was SO surreal being in 35oC heat on a beach and swimming in the sea on Christmas Day – I LOVED it! But the yucca plant tree we created (really last-minute) wasn’t a patch on our beautiful tree at home. What made the trip even more memorable was squeezing everything around revising for an A-Level Shakespeare exam I had waiting for me in January. I think studying The Tempest on the beach is definitely the way forward…”
Rachael, Book People Editor

“Christmas 2011 has to be the most memorable for me as my niece was born on 15th December and now I can’t imagine a Christmas without her! Our family is so close and it was amazing having a newborn baby in the house with us, I can’t even remember what gifts I received that year. Needless to say it’s all about Peppa Pig for my niece now and Peppa books, toys and clothes will be what she’s opening this year. Let’s just hope she’s more interested in the presents now rather than just the paper!”
Emma, Web Merchandiser

Peppa Pig: Snowy Fun

“I have way too many Christmas memories to pick from – it’s too hard to pick just one! But I am hoping to create some of the most memorable this year as I’m spending the festive season visiting my sister in Asia and friends in Australia. I’ve already received some early presents from my colleagues from the Travel Shop so I’m all set – so come back and ask me again this time next year…”
Sara, Online Experience Manager

Last week saw the birthdays of two of the world’s most famous children’s authors. Well known for The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Judith Kerr was 90 last week and we marked this occasion on both Facebook and Twitter.

Sadly no longer with us, it also would have been Where the Wild Things author Maurice Sendak’s 85th birthday last week and we also marked this with both a Facebook post and a tweet.

Anne Frank was also born on 12 June, 1929 and we decided to mark this with a beautiful quote from her diary.

Obviously, we’re all keen readers here at the Book People but we found some very famous and glamorous bookworms too and decided to post them on Facebook on Friday night. This wonderful collage shows how reading can appeal to all types of people. Who’s your favourite?

It was Father’s Day on Sunday 16 June so we had a variety of content about this important day, from a special Twitter background and Facebook header through to tweets about #LiteraryFatherFigures and a Pinterest board focused on some of our Favourite Literary Father Figures.

We also had a Pinterest board to tie in with our current Debut Fiction competition to win tickets to see the West End adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. For this competition, we have asked entrants to send in pictures of their bursting bookshelves and the Pinterest board shows some of our current favourites.

Our YouTube channel has had a fresh revamp and here you will find exclusive content, including interviews with famous authors, behind-the-scenes looks at events we’re involved in and two videos about how to grow your own tomatoes from Oliver, our Online Marketing Assistant and ‘the new Alan Titchmarsh’.
