The Book People’s picks of 2013

Talking about books is what we do best and as the end of the year draws closer we thought now would be the perfect time to share with you some of our highlights from 2013.

We’ve picked the books that have been stand-out reads for us here at the Book People HQ over the past 12 months alongside bestsellers that you, our lovely customers, have bought on mass too – so much so that we couldn’t keep them on the shelves of our warehouse long enough to ensure everyone could take home a copy.

Our very own in-house Spielberg has directed this short video with the Book People team to share with you what pages we’ve loved turning this year. Enjoy!

Still need convincing? Here’s why we loved them so much…

Recipe for Life by Mary Berry
Sophie:
“Is there anyone anywhere who doesn’t love Mary Berry? Totally readable and what an insight into an incredible woman… Inspiring from start to finish, and great for passing on to my mum and sisters after!”

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Rachael:
“Gripping, tense and with an incredible twist – what more could you want from a thriller? If you love this as much as me, read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn too (but not alone… or in the dark…!)”

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory
Emma:
“I loved the BBC series so decided to read the book after a friend highly recommended it – it’s even better! Amazing detail, believable characters and really pacy. “

A Short Book About Drawing by Andrew Marr
Mark:
“This may seem like a bizarre book but it’s incredibly interesting and really entertaining, I pinched a copy floating round the office and couldn’t put it down.”

Demon Dentist by David Walliams
Holly:
“David Walliams has done it again – another laugh-out-loud story with some real heart.”

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell
Claire:
“With a more humorous style than any of O’Farrell’s previous work, this Costa Novel Award-shortlisted book is full of memorable moments.”

Proper Pub Food by Tom Kerridge
Seb:
“The dishes in this cookbook were not only delicious, but also ever-so-simple to prepare – perfect for the likes of myself!”

Philippa Gregory – the Queen of Historical Fiction

Back in 2001 British author Philippa Gregory wrote the stunning novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, which was transformed into a blockbuster movie starring Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Jim Sturgess in 2008. Now the ever-popular work of the Queen of Historical Fiction is back on our screens, this time in the form of BBC One’s primetime 10-part Sunday evening series, The White Queen.

Known for her gripping storytelling, always incredibly accurate attention to detail, and ability to tell stories from times past in a way quite unlike any other, we are delighted to see the BBC’s dramatic adaption of the Cousins’ War Quartet unfold as the weeks go by, along with thousands of other eager viewers across the country. In true Book People-style however, we have to assure you that nothing compares to Gregory’s writing in it most raw form – on the page.

Her vivid descriptions, high-emotion and brilliant research expertly combine to create historical fiction that’s in a class of its own. The White Queen and the subsequent novels in this absorbing series are no exception. Here we witness the tragedy, triumph, love and despair during the War of the Roses portrayed so vividly by Gregory that her words have the power to throw readers amidst the most turbulent of years before the Tudor reign in England.

Philippa Gregory and her bestselling novels have always been a hit with Book People customers and now is the perfect time to become acquainted with the terrific writer with her Cousins’ War Quartet collection. With fresh new covers to tie-in with the BBC’s series and its stars, this incredible four-book collection is now available from the Book People for the unbeatable price of just £6.99, saving you more than £24 on the RRP value.

Telling the tales of the ambitious and determined women at the heart of ruling families during the mid to late 15th century, Gregory’s female protagonists demonstrate qualities of “some of the greatest plotters, fighters, spies and rebels” (Radio Times) who ever existed and these epic novels should be read by anyone with an interest in English history, or simply those after a totally compelling and wonderfully written saga.
