Jonas lives in a perfect world: no hunger, no poverty, no war, no pain and no grief. It is not until Jonas is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memory (a highly honoured job in the community) that he begins to realise that perhaps his world is not so perfect after all… I loved this book, I thought the concept on which it was based was fascinating and it drew me in straight away. Jonas, the main character, is likeable and entirely believable; the reader learns more about the life Jonas lives throughout the book as Jonas learns more about what life is like nowadays. This way you can easily sympathise and feel a connection with Jonas. It is a futuristic novel but the style is very different to most other futuristic books that I have read. The only part of the book that I didn’t like was the ending because it leaves the reader to make his/her own mind up about what happens. Although it is a very effective ending, I personally prefer more detailed endings where you discover what happens to the characters.
