  • The Fighting Jew

    Wynn Wheldon

    Product Code: CBGHB
    Hardback
As one of the first Jewish sporting superstars, Daniel Mendoza, boxing champion of England 1792-1795, challenged perceptions and stereotypes - he demanded respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk privately at length to the King. He made history by taking part in the first sporting event with an entrance fee. He pioneered `side-stepping' and was the greatest `scientific boxer' of the age. Daniel Mendoza is unarguably among the most important boxers in the history of the sport. Begetter of the Golden Age of British pugilism, patronised by dandies, royals and roaring boys, he was the creator of a sporting revolution at a time of political revolution. While there was a general prohibition on boxing, Mendoza's fight with Sam Martin in 1787 was arranged by the Prince of Wales! The diminutive Mendoza turned what had been a contest of brute strength with the indiscipline of a street brawl into what some called a science, some an art - but certainly a sport. As a publicist, he was an expert manipulator of public opinion. More than this, he used the anti-Semitism of his times to his own benefit, and in so doing raised the social status of his fellow Jews. By proving himself to be a great fighter, Mendoza helped to elevate the Jewish community and has been inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame as well as The Ring magazine Hall of Fame. His final achievement was to have written what may be the first sports autobiography. He was, in all these respects, quite exceptional, a superstar; or, as one contemporary put it, `The Complete Artist'. Astonishingly, this is the first full biography of one of Britain's greatest sporting heroes.

  • Joe Louis

    Tom Myler

    Product Code: BZKOP
    Hardback
Joe Louis was one of boxing's all-time greats. Undisputed heavyweight champion of the world for 11 years and nine months, the 'Brown Bomber' put his title on the line no less than 25 times. His classic fights with Max Baer, Max Schmeling, James J. Braddock, Billy Conn and many others are part of boxing lore. Often coming from behind to retain his prized title, his fights ended in a blaze of glory. In his prime, Louis was beaten only once, his other two losses coming at the end of his career. Louis also helped to smash the despicable colour bar which denied so many great heavyweights a title tilt. In 1937 he became the first black boxer to win the championship since Jack Johnson's reign ended 22 years earlier. Louis was a more popular champion than the arrogant Johnson, though outside the ring he had a string of lady friends, including many celebrities, all through his three marriages. A big spender and a notably poor entrepreneur, he was forever plagued by income tax demands. But when that first round bell rang, Louis was the business.

  • The Soul of a Butterfly

    Muhammad Ali

    Product Code: ABTMV
    Paperback
In this poignant, deeply moving book, Muhammad Ali shares the beliefs he has come to live by and which he has passed on to his children. Some of the wisdom is his own; some comes from the teachings of true Islam, from his spiritual studies, and from people he has met in the course of his extraordinary life. Here, as he recalls his relatively impoverished early days as a young warrior in Louisville, Kentucky, and his meteoric rise to fame as Heavyweight Champion of the World, a title he won three times, he tells of the many battles he won and lost, both inside and outside the ring, his conversion to Islam in the 1960s and the many life lessons he learned along the way. Now, working tirelessly as a worldwide ambassador for peace, he talks of the damage caused when religion is used to tear people apart, the essential need for unity in this troubled world, and how his faith sustains him on this, the most important journey of his life - the journey to forgiveness and peace. Together with his daughter Hana, in this timely spiritual memoir (which includes a selection of exclusive photographs) All draws upon his rich reserve of notes, tapes and journals, and writes with compassion, warmth and, of course, humour on how we can liberate mind, body and spirit when we pursue and embrace the one essential truth - love. As he says, 'It is after I retired from boxing that my true work began. I have embarked on a journey to love.'

  • Fighting Back

    Matt Bozeat

    Product Code: CAYIE
    Hardback
Fighting Back is the story of a different kind of boxing superstar - a hero for winning his battles outside as well as inside the ring. When he outpointed Wladimir Klitschko, on one of the greatest nights in British boxing history, Tyson Fury sat on top of the world. But 'The Gypsy King' soon discovered that being heavyweight champion wasn't all he had imagined. His own demons would prove harder to conquer than Klitschko. In the following months, Tyson drank and ate to excess, took drugs and contemplated suicide. He seemed destined for an early grave. But, with the help of his family, Fury dealt with his issues and launched a boxing comeback - after shedding an incredible ten stones in weight! Fury eased back with a couple of straightforward wins. Then, in what appeared a foolhardy, if very brave, move, he challenged unbeaten KO specialist Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight championship in Los Angeles. Having followed Fury's career from his first amateur bout, author Matt Bozeat has spent time with Fury and his family trying to get to know and fathom out this most remarkable of fighters and people. The result is the humour-laden, heart-wrenching, inspirational story of a boxer who conquered the world, lost everything - and then got it back.

  • Winning Not Fighting

    John Vincent

    Product Code: CBRCU
    Hardback
Winning Not Fighting draws on the philosophy of Wing Tsun, an ancient Chinese martial art, to offer a profound and practical guide to achieving success at work, life and business. By explaining what these teachings reveal about decision-making, professional relationships, personal targets and positivity, it challenges some of our deepest-held assumptions and encourages us to unlearn many ideas that inform our current ideas on professional success. Why, for example, do we refer to business through a lens of conflict? Why does winning always require confrontation, competition and a loser? John Vincent and Julian Hitch challenge our ingrained assumptions about success and achievement to guide us through a path of self-cultivation using the eight wisdoms of Wing Tsun. John Vincent, the co-founder of LEON, has applied these mantras to his healthy fast-food empire with enormous success. In Winning Not Fighting, he collaborates with Wing Tsun master, Sifu Julian Hitch to sculpt this timeless wisdom into a practical and accessible guide to achieving success for your business.

  • Striking Distance

    Charles Russo

    Product Code: CBPFQ
    Paperback
In the spring of 1959, eighteen-year-old Bruce Lee returned to San Francisco, the city of his birth. Although the martial arts were widely unknown in America, Bruce encountered a robust fight culture in the Bay Area, populated with talented and trailblazing practitioners such as Lau Bun, Chinatown's aging kung fu patriarch; Wally Jay, the innovative Hawaiian jujitsu master; and James Lee, the Oakland street fighter. Regarded by some as a brash loudmouth and by others as a dynamic visionary, Bruce spent his first few years back in America advocating for a modern approach to the martial arts, and showing little regard for the damaged egos left in his wake. The year of 1964 would be an eventful one for Bruce, in which he would broadcast his dissenting worldview before the first great international martial arts gathering, and then defend it by facing down Wong Jack Man-Chinatown's young kung fu ace-in a legendary behind-closed-doors showdown. These events were a catalyst to the dawn of martial arts in America and a prelude to an icon. Based on over one hundred original interviews, Striking Distance chronicles Bruce Lee's formative days amid the heated martial arts proving ground that thrived on San Francisco Bay in the early 1960s.
  • My Brother, Muhammad Ali

    Rahaman Ali

    Product Code: CBHVJ
    Hardback
'Rahaman has, at last, written the definitive biography on his late brother, which tells the real Ali story' - Mike Tyson More words have been written about Muhammad Ali than almost anyone else. He was, without doubt, the world's most-loved sportsman. At the height of his celebrity he was the most famous person in the world. And yet, until now, the one voice missing belonged to the man who knew him best - his only sibling, and best friend, Rahaman Ali. No one was closer to Ali than Rahaman. Born Cassius and Rudolph Arnett Clay, the two brothers grew up together, lived together, trained together, travelled together, and fought together in the street and in the ring. A near-constant fixture in his sibling's company, Rahaman saw Ali at both his best and his worst: the relentless prankster and the jealous older brother, the outspoken advocate, the husband and father. In My Brother, Muhammad Ali, he is able to offer a surprising insider's perspective on the well-known stories, as well as never-before-told tales, painting a rich and intimate portrait of a proud, relentlessly polarizing, yet often vulnerable man. In this extraordinary, poignant memoir, Rahaman tells a much bigger and more personal story than in any other book on the great man - that of two brothers, almost inseparable from birth to death. It is the final and most important perspective on one of the most iconic figures of the last century.

  • Unbeaten

    Mike Stanton

    Product Code: BYYHW
    Paperback
'Unbeaten is one of the best sports books I've read in years' Jonathan Eig, author of Ali: A Life Rocky Marciano accomplished a feat that eluded legendary champions like Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson: he never lost a professional fight. When he retired in 1956, his record was a perfect 49-0. Unbeaten is the revelatory biography of one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Marciano rose from abject poverty and a life of petty crime to become heavyweight champion and one of the most famous faces of his era. He dominated boxing in the decade following the Second World War with a devastating punch, which he nicknamed the `Suzie Q'. But perfection came at a price. Pulitzer Prize-winner Mike Stanton tells the story of Marciano's pursuit of greatness through the era of guys and dolls, hustlers and gamblers, glamorous celebrities and notorious mobsters. But boxing had its dark side, particularly at a time when Mafia mob bosses like Blinky Palermo and Frankie Carbo wielded immense power behind the scenes. Marciano retired while still in his prime, weighed down by the mob's influence in the sport he loved. For the last decade of his life, he wandered America, disillusioned, untrusting, hiding his money, cheating on his wife, consorting with the mobsters he had loathed for corrupting his sport, until his death in a plane crash in 1969, the night before his 46th birthday. Unbeaten by Mike Stanton is the story of a remarkable champion, a sport that was rotten to its core, and a country that may have expected too much from its heroes.
