Funnybooks is the story of the most popular American comic books of the 1940s and 1950s, those published under the Dell label. For a time, "Dell Comics Are Good Comics" was more than a slogan - it was a simple statement of fact. Many of the stories written and drawn by people like Carl Barks (Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge), John Stanley (Little Lulu), and Walt Kelly (Pogo) repay reading and rereading by educated adults even today, decades after they were published as disposable entertainment for children. Such triumphs were improbable, to say the least, because midcentury comics were so widely dismissed as trash by angry parents, indignant librarians, and even many of the people who published them. It was all but miraculous that a few great cartoonists were able to look past that nearly universal scorn and grasp the artistic potential of their medium. With clarity and enthusiasm, Barrier explains what made the best stories in the Dell comic books so special. He deftly turns a complex and detailed history into an expressive narrative sure to appeal to an audience beyond scholars and historians.
'I really have a secret satisfaction in being considered rather mad.' The name of William Heath Robinson has entered the national vocabulary as a by-word for eccentric inventions and makeshift solutions - and with good reason. His world of cogs, bits of string, magnets and precarious tipping points holds a universal appeal. Whacky machines and bemusing solutions to everyday problems are brought to life in this hilarious collection of cartoons from Heath Robinson. From wart removers to potato peelers to an early version of the holiday selfie, this much-loved classic illustrator and would-be inventor shows us that there really can be a gadget for everything!

In Narrative Structure in Comics: Making Sense of Fragments, Barbara Postema seeks to explain how comics communicate and create meaning, with an emphasis on two aspects of comics. She first examines the pictorial quality of comics, which receives more emphasis than verbal/textual elements. Her second focus is upon the storytelling and narrative qualities of comics, as well as the literary explorations they provide. The "narrative structure" refers to the potential of images, the story telling capacities of panels, and the sequence of panels, in addition to the more traditional narratological concepts. Overall, the author presents a credible rationale for the way in which comics structure their narratives. At every level of communication, comics rely on gaps or absences to create meaning and guide the reader to a meaningful experience. RIT Press is pleased to announce Narrative Structure in Comics as the first book published in its Comics Monograph Series. BARBARA POSTEMA is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she is working on a project about wordless comics. She has published several articles in the International Journal of Comic Art.
