This concise and accessible survey, the latest title in Thames & Hudsons renowned "World of Art" series, is set to become the definitive popular guide to graffiti and street art. The traditional letter-based graffiti that appeared on the streets of Philadelphia and New York over forty years ago launched a global art movement that has evolved into two distinct disciplines. While both thrive illegally and challenge the concept of public space, the new wave of street art puts greater emphasis on figures, abstraction, symbols and formal techniques. This book explains the terms and language of graffiti and street art from tags and throwies to culture jamming and subvertising as well as their multiple influences and sub-genres. Organized thematically, it traces the origins and evolution of graffiti and street art, and explores the motivations and practices of the leading exponents; the relationship between these art forms and the urban environment; their interactions with (or rejection of) the market and the world of commercial galleries; and, their increasingly important role in visual culture as a whole.

Can an artist claim that an object is a work of art if it has been made for him or her by someone else? If so, who is the author of such a work? And just what is the difference between a work of art and a work of craft? New in paperback, this is the first book to highlight and explore the way artists collaborate with artisans and craftspeople to realise their work. "The Art of Not Making" tackles, explores the concepts of authorship, artistic originality, skill, craftsmanship and the creative act, and highlighting the vital role that skills from craft and industrial production play in creating some of today's most innovative and highly sought-after works of art. The book analyses hundreds of artworks by the most important international artists, including Chris Burden, Louise Bourgeois, Matthew Barney, Grayson Perry, Mona Hatoum, Ai Weiwei, Daniel Buren, Carsten Holler, Mark Wallinger, Kiki Smith, Fred Wilson, Pae White, Tony Cragg, Roni Horn, Liam Gillick, Sherrie Levine, Ugo Rondionone, Subodh Gupta, Kara Walker and Maurizio Cattelan. "Enjoyable Petry clearly knows his stuff". ("Art Quarterly Timely"). "...Petry has identified a significant art world trend". ("The Art Newspaper"). "Glorious". ("Harper's Bazaar"). "A handsome volume ...provides pause for thought, and should be commended for drawing attention to the ideas of collaboration". ("Ceramic Review"). "Refreshingly fun to read and look at". ("State of Art"). "The arguments presented in this glossy erudite art book are bold, intriguing ...beautiful". ((GT) "Gay Times").

Following on from his successful Drawing Geometry, Jon Allen explores the creation of the many-sided three-dimensional forms known as the Platonic and Archimedean solids. Based on patterns of equally spaced points on a sphere, these polyhedra have been the fundamentals of geometric exploration for millennia. Many professionals find they need to be able to build three-dimensional shapes accurately, and understand the principles behind them. This unique book shows them how to make models of all the Platonic and Archimedean solids, as well as several other polyhedra and stellated forms. It provides step-by-step instructions for constructing the three-dimensional forms, as well as showing how to draw out accurately the geometry of the paperfold nets. Beginners and experienced artists and designers alike will find this book a source of practical guidance, as well as delight and inspiration which will amply repay the careful attention needed to construct the models.

The city as canvas: How self-expression, politics, and protest reclaim the streets Made in collaboration with its featured artists, Trespass traces the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, not just as a fringe visual movement but as a social phenomenon and central expression of youth. With an exclusive preface from Banksy, Trespass, now available as a popular Reader's Edition, presents the full historical sweep, international spread, and technical developments of the street art movement. Featuring key works by 150 artists, it connects four generations of street practitioners, incoporating both niche artists such as Miss Van and noteworthy names as Jean Tinguely, Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Gordon Matta-Clark, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls, and Banksy. The book is set out in thematic chapters that engage with the central theme of 'trespassing'. While images of the works are allowed to speak for themselves, each theme is prefaced by a brief essay to provide thought-provoking context to the history, politics, protest, and illicit performance of self-expression in the social space. Writers include Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra.

'Artistic research' is a new practice in which artists act as researchers and present their findings in the form of artwork. Originating from the English-speaking countries it has been taken-up in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and recently also in Germany and Switzerland. Simultaneously the practice has expanded from the visual arts to performing arts, film, writing and design. It is not clear, though, what exactly distinguishes artistic research from pure art and what the practice can contribute to the art world. The latest volume of the "Zurich Yearbook of the Arts" comprises eighteen new essays by specialist authors from Britain, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, and Switzerland. They prove that there are many distinct approaches to the subject. Besides discussing a range of questions theoretically, the book also presents examples of recent projects in artistic research. The authors examine the situation in the different disciplines and take into consideration artists' statements and research programs from various art universities. This title includes a text in English and German.
