About Charlie Cook's Favourite Book
Charlie Cook's Favourite Book (2005) is a bestselling children's picture book by author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler. It was shortlisted for Blue Peter's Most Fun Story with Pictures Award 2007. It begins with a boy named Charlie Cook, who loves to sit and read his favourite book - but this particular book is rather unusual!
Plot of Charlie Cook's Favourite Book
Charlie Cook is curled up in a cosy armchair, reading his favourite book. The book is about a pirate who has to walk the plank, swims to an island and finds a chest, within which is a book. This book is about Goldilocks, who, when the bears discover her, is in bed reading Baby Bear's favourite book. It's all about a knight and a dragon, but before the fight begins, the knight reads out a joke from his favourite book. This book is about a very well-read frog, who jumps into a library and onto a book.
This one's about an oak tree full of birds who are competing in a nest-building competition. A rook wins, his nest lined with pages of his favourite book, which is about a girl who sees a flying saucer with little green men in it! She runs to her mother, who is busy reading a magazine about a wicked jewel thief who stole the King's crown. The thief is thrown into prison, where he reads his favourite book. It's about a crocodile who goes into a bookshop to find a tasty dish, and only grows greedier when he discovers an encyclopaedia page about the biggest birthday cake ever made, baked for the Queen herself.
The cake is so good, a spaceman takes a slice to Jupiter with him, as well as a book. This book is about a ghost who haunts a castle at night, removing her head and giving everyone a fright. By morning, she sits down to read her favourite book, which is about a cosy armchair and a boy called Charlie Cook. Whew!
