Winnie-the-Pooh is one of fiction's best-loved bears and it's not hard to see why, his charming adventures with his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, his love for honey and the beautiful quotes that he says have given him a firm place in our hearts for generations.
A.A. Milne wrote his first Winnie-the-Pooh story in 1926 inspired by his son Christopher Robin (yes, Winnie's best human pal was named after the author's son!) and his collection of animal toys. The toy bear was given to Christopher Robin by his dad for his first birthday and named Winnie after a black bear that lived in London Zoo after being used as a mascot in the Canadian army in World War One.
The toys are now displayed in the New York Public Library, except for Roo who was lost in an orchard in the 1930s and Owl and Rabbit who were imagined up by A. A. Milne and the books' illustrator E.H. Shepard. Over the years the Winnie-the-Pooh books grew in popularity and were translated into many languages - the strangest one, however? Latin! In fact, the Latin translation of Winnie-the-Pooh is the only Latin book in history to have a slot on The New York Times best-seller list!
Below are just some of our favourite quotes from the wonderful adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh for you to enjoy...
And that is the wisdom of Winnie-the-Pooh!
