Throughout March, Book People have been involved in a very special campaign run by award-winning education charity Achievement for All. The 100 Million Minutes Reading Challenge, which launched on World Book Day (1st March 2018) aims to encourage young people across the UK to read for a whopping 100 Million Minutes. As part of the challenge, we're offering the lucky winners 5,000 pounds RRP worth of books!
The challenge has been open to early years settings, schools, colleges, parents, carers, childminders and community groups across the UK. Nearly 2,000 schools, settings, community groups and parents and carers across the country registered with over 400,000 children and young people taking part!
Whilst we wait to see whether young readers across the country can hit the 100 Million Minutes (which we're confident they can!), we wanted to highlight the amazing milestones along the way. With support from Walking Dead actor Lennie James, international supermodel David Gandy, football teams West Ham United FC and Albion in the Community and so many more ambassadors, young people across the country have been inspired to pick up their books and read for a very good cause.
This campaign aims to increase literacy and a love of reading across the UK, which is a cause close to our hearts. Did you know that up to two in five children in disadvantaged communities across the UK have difficulties with literacy? Just ten minutes a day can make a huge impact to a child's development - so just think about what 100 million minutes can do.
We're proud to have been a part of this wonderful initiative and we're very excited to award 5,000 pounds RRP worth of books to the winners. Watch this space for more news and announcements once the challenge is over!
