The Bedtime Story Competition is Back for 2018

After the amazing success of last year's competition, we're thrilled to announce that our Book People Bedtime Story Competition is back for its third year! The competition sees young writers tasked with writing a 200-800 word story on the theme of imagination. Three children with be selected to win their age category with the overall winner given the opportunity of a lifetime: to see their story professionally illustrated and published as a real picture book!

Your child or student could become a published author!

Our UK-wide competition gives one young writer aged between 5 and 11 has the chance of having their book illustrated by top children's book illustrator Sara Sanchez, published by Little Tiger and sold exclusively by us at Book People with at least 35% of the proceeds of each book sale going to our charity partner Save the Children UK! We can't wait to award one lucky winner with this amazing opportunity.

The theme of this year's competition is imagination so we want to read all about imaginary worlds, imaginary friends and see what other ideas our entrants come up with on this exciting theme.

How to enter

The competition will be open from the 6th September until the 29th October so you have just under two months to get your children's entries into our submissions page. Their stories must be 200-800 words and be on the theme of imagination. Entries can either be submitted by the parent or guardian of the entrant or by their teacher. We will then have three age category winners picked by our panel of judges with one story chosen to be the overall winner that will be published as a picture book available to purchase in 2019. Each category winner will receive £250 worth of our hand-picked books for themselves as well as a further £250 for their school.

This year's Head Judge is inspiring entrants to go for gold

Our Hea Our Head Judge this year will be two-time Olympic gold champion rower and author Alex Gregory MBE! Alex has recently retired from rowing and turned his hand to writing. His new book Dadventures aims to inspire parents to find new imaginative ways to spend time with their children. We think this makes him the perfect Head Judge for this year's competition! Alex will also be taking part in a Facebook Live with us later in September to answer your questions and inspire your children's imaginations so keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details.

This year Alex will also be helping us with a special bonus prize! Every school that enters more than 10 of their students' stories to the competition will be put into a prize draw to win a school visit from Alex during the 2019 spring term.

The competition is open now!

Last year saw the then 9-year-old Frasier Cox win our Bedtime Story Competition 2017 with his story There's a Boy Just Like Me about an imagined friendship between the author and a refugee. We can't wait to see what amazing stories we'll see this year.

Find all the terms and conditions and information you need on our website. We're thrilled to be bringing back the competition and are very keen to see where your children's imaginations take them for this year's competition. Don't forget the competition closes on the 29th October and we want to wish the best of luck to every entrant.
