The Book People's Summer Holidays Tips and Advice

The summer holidays is a big deal for parents. Whether you're excited to spend the holidays with your kids, trying to find activities to fill the weeks or looking for great childcare, there are a range of different emotions the holidays bring. We asked a few of the parents at The Book People offices to gather useful tips and advice to make your summer holidays go as smoothly as possible and to see what challenges they encounter when the summer comes. Here's what they said...

Rachel Masterson, Account Manager

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

We create a read aloud area at home, ideally in the garden if the weather's nice with cushions and a blanket! Darcey can bring along her bears and dollies for story time. We take it in turns to read a few pages/chapters. You can see her in her reading den in the photo.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

Camping! As a family with three dogs we love to go on adventures that our four legged members can enjoy too. Giant marshmallows on the BBQ with a hot chocolate before bed and campfire stories!

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

I think the biggest challenge for all parents in the holidays is childcare! Every year we wonder how we will manage but thanks to grandparents, family and friends we seem to make it through to the other side!

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

We have made a chart with a different book per week. We have 6 in in total and we aim to read these all by the time school starts in September.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

The adventures we are planning on going on (all within Wales/ England).

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

Being able to spend time whilst with my son whilst working. It's hard to spend a lot of time with him at once.

Louise Hammond, Accounts Assistant

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

Previously, we have taken part in reading challenges.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

I am looking forward to not having to iron school uniform or worry if she has everything she needs for school.

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

Our biggest challenge is childcare as we both work full time and also having to work while she is not at school.

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

Give them a reward per chapter, such as Explore Days.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

Explore Days!

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

Ensuring enough is planned ahead for Gwion 12 & Cadi 10. Writing with them both a plan for days out, this helps them both create days relevant to them as well as the buy in to the day.

Craig Dawson, Telesales Manager

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

I find with my two girls, reading gives them the opportunity to relax and unwind whilst keeping the mind occupied.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

Making memories and going on adventures. Nothing more exciting than getting up in the morning and seeing where the day takes you - whether it's a visit to the beach, walking in the mountains as long as we are having fun together that's the main thing.

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

Keeping the children occupied and keeping costs to a minimum. I try to make sure the children are active, both physically and mentally, and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible (weather permitting). We do a lot of crafts with items we find whilst out and about - nothing beats gluing, painting and creating something from nothing.

Gav, Head of Design

What's your one tip for encouraging your children to read this summer holiday?

Make it fun, read in a den, read to a sibling, to a pet, under the covers. Encouraging them to choose the book will also help.

What are you most looking forward to whilst the kids are off school?

Quality time together, hanging out and making memories instead for rushing to work or school.

What's the biggest challenge during the summer holiday season for you and your family?

Childcare. Making sure that your time is planned out. You can guarantee that there will be one day you've missed.

We hope you and your family have a brilliant (and relaxing!) summer holiday, filled with fun, adventure and, of course, books.
