Beatrix Potter

Born in Kensingston in 1866 and largely associated with her love of animals and the Lake District, Beatrix Potter was the creator of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Squirrel Nutkin. Her illustrated stories quickly became iconic classics and continue to be popular with children to the present day. Beatrix Potter died in December, 1943 and left nearly all her property (including over 4,000 acres of land) to the National Trust. She’s widely credited with preserving the land that constitutes the Lake District National Park.
