Bernard Cornwell

The man who created the unforgettable Richard Sharpe (played so memorably in the TV adaptation by Sean Bean), Bernard Cornwell was born on 23 February, 1944 in London and adopted by an Essex family who belonged to a cult called the Peculiar People. Inspired by C.S. Forester’s books about British naval officer Horatio Hornblower, Bernard decided to write historical novels that focused on fascinating eras including Napoleonic times and the Saxon period (adapted into the Last Kingdom by the BBC).

After falling in love, Bernard moved to the States to be with his partner. When he was refused a green card, he decided to stay in the country and earn a living by writing - a profession that did not need a permit. He still lives in America today and is happily married to his wife. The attention to historical detail in his exciting adventure stories makes him a beloved author all around the world.
