He stayed in Britain for most of his life, writing a hilarious and informative book about the nation’s quirks in 1995’s Notes From a Small Island before heading back to the United States the same year. He returned to Britain in 2003.

Born William McGuire ‘Bill’ Bryson, Notes From a Small Island brought him to the public’s attention and was accompanied by a hit TV series while his book that aimed to make science accessible - 2003’s A Short History of Nearly Everything - won the Aventis Prize.
