In this companion to the hit TV series Tracks Across America, Billy Connolly travels the United States via some of the nation's greatest railroads.

With a clear love for the nation shining through, Billy describes his experiences with great insight and humour. Travelling on the railroads that built the country, he heads from Chicago to California (the route the first European settlers undertook) before heading south and eastwards through Arizona, Alabama and ending in New York.

In a journey of over 6,000 miles and 26 states, Billy introduces a number of US residents who have seen so many things and are more than happy to provide an insight into their lives and the pride they share in their homeland.

Billy tells us the gripping story of his adventures in some of the remotest parts of the world. In the summer of 2008 Billy Connolly set sail on a ten-week journey from ocean to ocean: from the Atlantic to the Pacific, by way of the North West Passage -- a fabled route deep within the Arctic Circle that has thwarted explorers and fortune-hunters for centuries. For Cook, Drake and countless other adventurers, the North West Passage was an alluring but impossible journey, a trial of unparallelled physical and mental strength, a haunting and fascinating wilderness. Today the melting of the polar icecaps makes it accessible for the first time. Billy's adventure embraces a memorable mix of bizarre encounters, Hemingway-esque characters, incredible wildlife, forgotten languages, big-game hunting and all-night carousing under the midnight sun.
