Herman Melville was a novelist, poet and short story writer who was born under the name Herman Melvill on 1 August, 1819. He worked during the American Renaissance period and is best known for his whaling novel, Moby-Dick.
Containing one of the best opening lines of all time – ‘Call me Ishmael’ – the novel was actually released to mixed reviews and following the lack of commercial acclaim, Melville soon turned his attention to poetry.
