Allan Ahlberg was born on 5 June, 1938 in Croydon and Janet was born on 21 October, 1944 in Huddersfield. The couple met at teacher training college in Sunderland and Janet started illustration children’s books in 1972. The pair teamed up in 1976 and the classic Burglar Bill was one of their first books.
Janet won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Each Peach Pear Plum in 1978 and their greatest success was 1986’s The Jolly Postman (6 million copies sold and counting) and their books also include Peepo! and Funnybones. Janet died of breast cancer in 1994. The couple worked together for 20 years and their books still remain among the most popular in libraries.
