Born under the name Richard Chester Brown, Jeff Brown was born in 1926 and died in 2003. He was a child actor before creating his only ever book character – the one and only Flat Stanley.
The idea for Flat Stanley came about while reading his sons a bedtime story and discovering one of them was scared that a noticeboard would fall on him and squash him. The first Flat Stanley book was published in 1964 and was a massive success in the United States with children even sending a cut-out Stanley figure to The White House. Jeff followed the original story up with five books in the 1990s.
