Since 1952 former London buses have found new homes across the whole of the UK as well as in over seventy countries across the world, and this book takes a wide look at those that gained new lives outside the capital. Paying diligence to their use in the Second World War, London's Exiled Buses explores the turbulent and sometimes surprising lives of these icons of British public transport. Follow their story and step into the past to discover how developments in both technology and society have determined the fate of the many models of the London bus. • Britain's Bendy Buses

    Keith A. Jenkinson

    Product Code: BYAUI
    Paperback
Unlike other parts of the world, Britain was slow to start operating bendy buses and, despite the first ones appearing in service in Sheffield in 1978, it was not until 1985 that the next examples made their appearance, again in Sheffield. Somewhat surprisingly it took a further thirteen years before bendy buses gained wider acceptance in the UK and began to appear in other towns and cities, with the largest number being operated in London from 2002. Never reaching their potential, however, their number failed to grow to any extent and only 858 were ever placed in service, with their mass withdrawal commencing as early as 2009. Profusely illustrated in colour, this book takes a detailed look at the bendy buses operated in the UK and their lives since their disposal by major operators.

  • Stagecoach in the Twenty-First Century

    Keith A. Jenkinson

    Product Code: BUJCP
    Paperback
Carrying on the story of Stagecoach, this volume looks at the company's continuing growth across the UK and its various overseas ventures, which took it to Hong Kong, mainland Europe, the USA, Canada and New Zealand. In addition to its ongoing expansion and the continual upgrading of its bus and coach fleet, it also introduced numerous innovative ventures including Magicbus, megabus and Stagecoach Gold, all of which heralded new travel concepts across the UK and overseas. No doubt, in the years ahead, Stagecoach will continue to expand whenever, and wherever, opportunities arise, and also continue in its bid to further minimise the impact of its operations on the environment with an increase in alternatively powered buses, including hybrid, gas, hydrogen and electric. Here, Keith A. Jenkinson brings the Stagecoach story up to the present time, leaving no stone unturned and illustrating it fully with colour photography.

  • Stagecoach in Scotland

    Keith A. Jenkinson

    Product Code: BSBOS
    Paperback
Starting in October 1980 as a small coach operator with two coaches and a service from Glasgow to London, Stagecoach rapidly developed throughout Scotland in the 1980s and 1990s when it purchased three major Scottish Bus Group companies and a number of smaller independent operators before floating on the stock market as a plc. After initially relying on the second0hand vehicle market, which produced a wide variety of buses, it ultimately began purchasing new vehicles that like their predecessors were painted in the company's corporate livery. Having always been an operator that has attracted a wide enthusiast following, this book traces the development of the company from its humble beginnings to its current major status and as such will have a wide appeal across the whole of the UK.

  • Bus Dealers and Breakers of Yorkshire

    Keith A. Jenkinson

    Product Code: BPMGE
    Paperback
Since the late 1920s Yorkshire has played a major role in the sale of second-hand buses and coaches, as well as their ultimate end-of-life destruction. For many years, one of the UK's largest used bus dealers, who during its long and proud history purchased more than 1,500 redundant buses from London Transport in a single transaction, was located in Leeds, where several other smaller but similar concerns were also active. Since the early 1960s Yorkshire has become the main UK hub for bus and coach dismantling, particularly in the Barnsley and Rotherham area due to its close proximity to the heavy metals market. Within this book, the area's dealing and scrap industries are both covered in depth through text and photographs to illustrate the importance of their past and present activities in these fields.

  • National Express Coaches

    Keith A. Jenkinson

    Product Code: BNYLV
    Paperback
Although several coaching pools for express services were established in the late 1920s, it was not until 1972, three years after the formation of the National Bus Company, that a nationwide, fully coordinated express coach network came into being under the National banner. With coaches provided by the various NBC subsidiaries, National Express dominated the scene and continues to do so today despite opposition from other major operators. Over its forty-five years of existence it has introduced numerous innovative features and developed a motorway network of routes, some of which have been operated by double-deck vehicles, and has become a familiar sight across the whole of the UK. In this book, the history of National Express is covered comprehensively by author Keith Jenkinson in both text and photographs.
