Head back to East London in 1973 and discover how it all began for Jane Tennison in this thrilling prequel to Prime Suspect.

Fresh out of Hendon Police College and placed on probationary exercise on the troublesome streets of Hackney, 22-year-old Tennison learns to thrive in this rough and ready environment. She's encountering further struggles at the station as she's forced to prove herself in a male-dominated and often chauvinistic world.

Thrown in at the deep end, Tennison finds herself investigating the killing of a young girl who has been savagely beaten. It's this case that gives her the required grit, determination and mindset to progress from WPC to DCI.

A character who was so memorably brought to our screens by Helen Mirren in the TV adaptation, Lynda La Plante's Tennison is a chilling, fascinating and revealing book about one of the best detectives in fiction.

Marcus and Lena Fulford are the envy of their friends. Wealthy, attractive and successful, the couple, with their strikingly beautiful teenage daughter Amy, seem settled and content. But appearances mask a strained relationship almost at breaking point. Marcus's latest business venture has failed, draining Lena, the major breadwinner, dry. Putting Amy into weekly boarding school and striving to get her own career back on its feet, Lena remains alone in the luxurious family house as her marriage heads towards as amicable a divorce as she and Marcus can muster, and joint custody of their only child. So when Amy arranges a sleepover with a school friend one weekend, neither parent sees the need to be in touch with her. It is only when Amy is reported missing from school and her friend's mother reveals that, instead of staying with them, Amy was visiting her father - a fact vehemently denied by Marcus - that Lena contacts the police. DI Victor Reid, in charge of the case, fears the worst - abduction or murder. A family under constant police and press scrutiny, a father who has seemingly lied about his alibi for the weekend, a mother whose perfect world is crumbling beneath her feet, a detective under pressure from his impatient superiors to deliver a result, the length of time that Amy has been missing gathering speed...all conspire to make Lynda La Plante's latest thriller her most tense and terrifying yet.

Head back to the 1970s and follow Prime Suspect's Jane Tennison as she transfers to CID in Lynda La Plante's Hidden Killers. The sequel to last year's Tennison, this is equally compelling and brutal.

Tennison is young and inexperienced and learns the hard way never to take anyone - or anything - at face value. She's working as a decoy prostitute in the hope of capturing a suspect wanted for numerous sexual assaults. When she succeeds in doing this, she's commended for her bravery and moves to Bow Street Station as Detective. Her first call-out is treated as a non-suspicious death, but Tennison isn't so sure.

Despite being entirely different circumstances, this case starts to interweave with the evidence against her assailant and Tennison is sure there is more to both these cases than meets the eye...

Marcus's latest business venture has failed, draining Lena, the major breadwinner, dry.
