Books by Michael Hymans

  • Southern Region Through the 1970s

    Michael Hymans

    Product Code: BPYZO
    Paperback
Following the end of steam on the network, many stations were devoid of notebook holding, camera toting enthusiasts on the ends of busy station platforms. This did not mean that there was nothing of interest happening. The 1970s saw the end of famous trains like the Brighton Belle and the green livery of the Southern change to a BR corporate livery of firstly blue and then blue/grey livery for coaching stock. Older pre-war coaching stock was being phased out with new open plan seating units being introduced. Industrial relations on the railways were not good, with lightning strikes regularly taking place. There were also a number of serious accidents, and the results and causes of these make for interesting reading. Aided by a wealth of previously unpublished images, Michael Hymans documents this tumultuous decade in the history of the Southern Region.

  • British Coaching

    Michael Hymans

    Product Code: AYYRT
    Paperback
Coaches have long been a part of life in Britain, from the days of eighteenth-century stage coaches galloping along muddied tracks to air-conditioned fleets cruising the motorways of the modern day. As we moved past the horse-driven coaches of the past, and the charabancs and buses that followed, three key parts of the industry shaped the world of coaching as we know it today: the chassis manufacturers, the coachbuilders and the operators. Delving into his impressive collections of rare and unseen photographs, Mick Hyman explores each of these in turn and delivers a fascinating, lavishly illustrated history of the major players in the world of British coaching. Profiling major names such as AEC, Leyland, Duple and Bristol, with photographs dating back as far as the early twentieth century, this is an essential volume for any enthusiast keen to learn more about Britain's coaching history.

    Michael Hymans

    Product Code: AVKYF
    Paperback
Packed with rare and unpublished images, Sussex Steam takes the reader on a journey around picturesque Sussex and the steam trains that used to call it home. Taking in what would have been the first route travelled, Rye to Portsmouth in 1841, a number of secondary routes, locomotive sheds and the works in Brighton, these fascinating photographs offer a nostalgic look back to a time when steam was king. Packed with scenic shots ranging from the days of the LB&SCR to the final days of steam, many shots feature aspects of the local landscape now lost to history, such as signal boxes and forgotten station nameplates, as well as scenes that endure to this day, such as the white cliffs at Lewes. Lavishly illustrated throughout, with photographs supplemented by timetables and excursion notes, Sussex Steam paints a terrific portrait of services throughout the county's 120 years of steam travel.

  • Southdown Buses

    Michael Hymans

    Product Code: AVKYD
    Paperback
Before Southdown became part of the National Bus Company, it was a well respected organisation. It became a byword for efficiency and comfort over the large area it operated in - from Portsmouth in the west to Eastbourne in the east, as well as inland to the Surrey border. They operated local bus services, express coach services and excursions. It is said that when touting for business on seafronts with other companies, their drivers did not have to approach the public - due to their reputation, the public approached them. Published here for the first time, this book collects 200 previously unseen photographs of Southdown buses during the 1950s and acts as an invaluable document of an iconic aspect of British transport history.
