  • West Kowloon Station

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BZRYE
    Hardback
The is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal in Hong Kong, completed in 2018, with a rare glimpse at all stages of plans, design, and construction. Located centrally in Hong Kong, this is the largest below ground station in the world. The high-speed rail terminus station will connect Hong Kong to Beijing with the largest rail network in history, expected to strengthen the city s strategic position as the southern gateway of China. West Kowloon Station enjoys a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline, but when Bromberg s team entered the competition to design it, they encountered a problem the station is mostly 100 feet belowground. His solution was to ensure the station was civic-minded and to create a large volume capped by a shell-like dome that rises from the earth, capturing daylight and sending it deep underground. Even as they stand on the subterranean concourse, passengers can catch a glimpse of Victoria Peak and the city s tallest buildings. In order to keep the space open and airy, Bromberg minimized the number of columns needed to support the vast atrium. His team devised a system that branches out, giving the organic appearance that complements the sweep of the station roof. This book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building as well as an interview with the architect.

  • Under One Roof: EPFL ArtLab in Lausanne by Kengo Kuma

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BTKZL
    Hardback
This book looks at ArtLab, an innovative facility in Lausanne, Switzerland, intended to bridge the gap between science and the humanities on a university campus. This superbly illustrated volume presents the ArtLab project, which highlights the intersection of science, art, and the public at the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Switzerland. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, ArtLab is a symbolic place of art, culture, and technology. The project combines three structures: the first is a welcome area to learn about the university's research, the second structure is an exhibition space that hosts art installations, while the third pavilion houses the newly digitized Montreux Jazz Festival archives and a caf . The three pavilions are connected, constituting a single building with a folded roof, a topographical flow, and a hybrid steel and wood frame. ArtLab is located near buildings by SANAA and Dominique Perrault, forming a new heart for the EPFL campus. Kuma's building, originally entitled "Under One Roof," is an example of how innovative, problemsolving, and adaptive architecture is transforming the world.

  • Casa Moderna

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BROFU
    Hardback
Since the sensuous Modernism pioneered by Oscar Niemeyer in Brazil, Latin America has become one of the most exciting locations for contemporary architecture in the world. Alejandro Aravena and Paulo Mendes da Rocha, both recent Pritzker Prize winners, are just two very different examples of the wide architectural range, set amid varied climates, social conditions and environments, that has brought international attention to a continent making a name for itself as a centre for innovation and experimentation. From the dramatic plateaux of the Andes to the lush tropics of the Amazon to the world's driest desert, the Atacama, the rich range of climates, terrains and cultural influences across Latin America offers significant opportunities to create new residential architecture. This overview showcases the most accomplished and rarely seen contemporary houses, by established names - Isay Weinfeld, Mathias Klotz and Marcio Kogan - as well as the rising talents now receiving recognition on the world stage, including Pezo von Ellrichshausen and Giancarlo Mazzanti. Following an introduction that sets out the development of Latin American architecture since Niemeyer, the book reveals how each house has gone beyond its brief in stunning and unexpected ways, resulting in buildings that transcend their time and place.

  • Cabins

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BQDDM
    Hardback
Ever since Henry David Thoreau's described his two years, two months, and two days of cabin existence at Walden Pond, Massachusetts in Walden, or, Life in the Woods (1854), the idea of a refuge dwelling has seduced the modern psyche. In the past decade, as our material existence and environmental footprint has grown exponentially, architects around the globe have become particularly interested in the possibilities of the minimal, low-impact, and isolated abode. This new TASCHEN title, combining insightful text, rich photography and bright, contemporary illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi, explores how this particular architectural type presents special opportunities for creative thinking. In eschewing excess, the cabin limits actual spatial intrusion to the bare essentials of living requirements, while in responding to its typically rustic setting, it foregrounds eco-friendly solutions. As such, the cabin comes to showcase some of the most inventive and forward-looking practice of contemporary architecture, with Renzo Piano, Terunobu Fujimori, Tom Kundig and many fresh young professionals all embracing such distilled sanctuary spaces. The cabins selected for this publication emphasize the variety of the genre, both in terms of usage and geography. From an artist studio on the Suffolk coast in England to eco-home huts in the Western Ghats region of India, this survey is as exciting in its international reach as it is in its array of briefs, clients, and situations. Constant throughout, however, is architectural innovation, and an inspiring sense of contemplation and coexistence as people return to nature and to a less destructive model of being in the world.

  • 100 Contemporary Wood Buildings

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BIAZD
    Hardback
Timberland The wooden structures of the 21st century Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This Bibliotheca Universalis edition explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood by architects around the world. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jurgen Mayer H., and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, such as at the Termas Geometricas Hot Springs Complex in Pucon, Chile, by German del Sol. True to all TASCHEN architecture titles, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each architect's vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood's enduring appeal to our senses and psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian simplicity.About the series: Bibliotheca Universalis-- Compact cultural companions celebrating the eclectic TASCHEN universe at an unbeatable, democratic price!Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, the name TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible, open-minded publishing. • Cairo

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: BGDWK
    Hardback
This book reveals how the Aga Khan Development Network and its Historic Cities Programme transformed an area of Cairo's urban blight into a dynamic public space. Once a city of verdant gardens and parks, Cairo in the 1980s was severely overcrowded, economically struggling, and many of its inhabitants lived in unsanitary conditions. Historic Cairo, a World Heritage Site centered on the original Fatimid settlement of Cairo, has presented a challenge to conservationists and urban planners over the years as they have sought to protect the city's heritage while it remains a living city. Understanding how the process of decline could be reversed by restoring monuments and building a new park, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) set about revitalizing the Darb al Ahmar area and creating Al Azhar Park. This book features numerous scholarly contributors and authors who participated in the program, and shows how the conservation effort paid off in countless ways.

  • The New Pavilions

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: AURGG
    Hardback
Tents, bandstands, displays, places for sitting, listening, seeing and being seen...Pavilions have myriad forms and as many functions. For architects and designers, they offer unique opportunities to experiment with form, construction, material, structure, surface and texture, often as prototypes for larger buildings or as purely artistic pursuits. A pavilion's particular location also offers rich possibilities for interaction with the landscapes, streetscapes and peoplescapes around it. Pavilions can be temples to digital interaction or provide oases of surreal calm and isolation. This is a selection of the best examples produced in recent years. From the cutting- edge forms of Sou Fujimoto to Zaha Hadid's Chanel pavilion, from small structures created entirely out of farm waste to a mirrored carapace conceived by Olafur Eliasson, each pavilion featured provides a lesson in the extreme possibilities of built form and demonstrates that many of the biggest ideas in architecture start small.

  • David Chipperfield

    Philip Jodidio

    Product Code: AQGZC
    Hardback
"Architecture has to explain itself. It has got to be very clear, what you might call simple." Born in 1953, David Chipperfield worked for both Norman Foster and Richard Rogers before establishing a reputation for himself in Japan in the early 80s, and setting up David Chipperfield Architects in 1984. The practice, which now operates out of London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai has gone on to win over 50 national and international competitions. Suspicious of "starchitecture". Chipperfield adheres instead to a meticulously crafted minimalism in which volumes and light come together in masterful harmony. Less concerned with an immediately recognizable, individual style, he rather aspires to an architecture founded on collaboration, ideas, and excellence. His buildings are intended as physically immediate spaces in which "a sort of ordinariness" becomes special, and the individual structure co-exists with broader concepts of city building. Chipperfleld's vision has driven major projects around the globe, from the Des Moines Public Library in Iowa, USA to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, UK and the famed reconstruction of the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany. Recent work includes the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the expansion of the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, USA. This monograph features twenty four of Chipperfield's most significant projects, with a thorough introduction, detailed descriptions, and an extensive interview covering his major influences, and guiding principles on structure, space, and urban experience.
