Philip Pullman

Containing Northern Lights (known in the US and its film adaptation as The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, the His Dark Materials trilogy is a very popular fantasy series with all ages. It boldly and brilliantly tackles a number of important subjects. Its author Philip Pullman was born in Norwich on 19 October, 1946 and first came to attention with the Sally Lockhart series which began in 1985.

Educated in England, Zimbabwe and Australia before his family settled in North Wales, Philip has published over 20 books in his career and has won many awards, including the Carnegie Medal in 1995 for Northern Lights and both the Whitbread Prize and Whitbread Book of the Year in 2002. It was actually the first children’s book to be awarded this prestigious prize. He was also awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2005 by the Swedish Arts Council. A supporter of the British Humanist Association and honorary associate of the National Secular Society Philip still writes in a shed at the bottom of his garden.
