Thank you for your continued patience and understanding. The Book People
Awarded an OBE in 1999 for services to children’s literature and a two-times Kate Greenaway Medal winner, Shirley Hughes is one of the most respected picture book authors and illustrators of all time. Born on 16 July, 1927 in West Kirby, she has written over 70 stories and illustrated over 270 in her warming, traditional style.
Her traditional, pen-and-paint artwork was first seen in a picture book in 1960’s Lucy and Tom’s Day and throughout her career she has quietly innovated and brought her stories up to date with technical advancements. The winner of the Booktrust Lifetime Achievement award in 2015, Shirley Hughes has sold over 11.5 million copies and the likes of Alfie and Dogger are among children’s enduring favourites.
