Suzanne Collins

A Red House Children’s Book Award-winning author who brought the world The Hunger Games and the iconic character Katniss Everdeen (famously played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film adaptations), Suzanne Collins was born into a military family on 10 August, 1962. Her father served in Vietnam, her grandfather was gassed during World War I and her uncle was injured during World War II.

Starting her career as a TV writer, the idea for The Hunger Games came to her while channel-hopping between a reality TV show and a news report about war. Inspired by the likes of 1984, Lord of the Flies and Anna Karenina, Suzanne pitched the Hunger Games as a trilogy from the start, taking in a game, revolution and war. The first Hunger Games book was published in 2008 (the first film followed in 2012) and the series has now sold over 50 million copies.
