Once there was a goose called Katerina! Katerina was the only goose on her pond, and this made her very sad and rather lonely. Sometimes she thought she could see another goose in the side of the bank manager, Mr Buswell's shiny car. She would stare and stare at it, hoping that one day that goose would come out and join her on the pond. "Just look at that silly bird!" said Mr Buswell. But everyone liked Katerina no matter what he said. One dark Christmas night when everyone was at a party in the square, Katerina woke alone. She went to see the goose in the shiny car, but the goose had gone -- had he come out at last? And who was that man with the goose-sized bag coming out of the bank? Was he carrying a goose-sized companion for Katerina? When Katerina stops him to find out, she becomes the local heroine and gains a wonderful reward -- life on her pond will never be the same again!

A lavishly illustrated retrospective in celebration of the 90th birthday of Judith Kerr, author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea and many other iconic books. Her story begins with the extraordinary events of her early childhood in Berlin, dramatically cut short by the rise of Hitler's Nazi Party in 1933. Judith tells of her family's struggles with language and money, and what it was like to be a German refugee in London during the war. We see her early attempts at drawing and writing; her sketches and work from art school, and her textile designs from her first job. We hear of her life-changing meeting with her future husband, the scriptwriter Nigel Kneale, and her time at the BBC, first as a reader and then as a scriptwriter herself. Judith's career as a children's book writer and illustrator began after she had children, and over forty years on she is still producing classic picture books. She is a rare and wonderful talent and this is a fascinating insight into the person behind the books that have been enjoyed by generations.

'There is a chap at the door jist as Sophie an her mum are sittin doon for their tea. Wha could it be? They dinna think it's a muckle, furry, strippit teeger -- that's for shair!' No children's bookshelf is complete without the classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea, but what if Sophie opened the door to find a teeger that's cam for his tea instead? Celebrating its 50th roaring anniversary in 2018, Judith Kerr's much-loved picture book is charmingly retold for the first time in Scots. Keeping all the iconic elements of the story, Scots expert Susan Rennie gives the words a lively Scots twist -- a plate of sandwiches becomes a 'hail plate o pieces' and the big, furry, stripy tiger becomes a 'muckle, furry, strippit teeger'. This bright and bonnie take on a childhood favourite is perfect for reading aloud with young children.
