About Us

Once upon a time,

Edward Smart (but he only answers to Ted) found himself at a bit of a loose end…

He and fellow bookworm Seni Glaister conjured up the wonderful idea of taking books right to the doors of people who wouldn't normally go into a bookshop so they could discover the magic hidden behind the colourful covers.

Armed with a genuine passion for reading,

some delightful books and a trusty van, Ted, Seni, and the Book People found their first loyal customers in an array of offices scattered around the Guildford area. It was here they began spreading the joy of reading…

By 1990 there were 140 local booksellers around the country sporting bright red Book People shirts and visiting every kind of workplace imaginable… from convents to crèches, dentists to prisons!

“But what about the people we can’t visit?”

cried Ted one busy day. And it was with this thought, a carefully folded sheet of A3 paper and some nifty design work that the Book People catalogue came to life, shortly followed by the online store.

After opening their Haydock warehouse in 1996,

two busy years later the friendly Book People family set up HQ at a picturesque, slightly dilapidated manor house in Surrey, complete with lake, allotments, llamas and a few peacocks…

… While in 2002, in the foothills of Snowdonia a state–of–the–art warehouse and call centre opened which is now full of lots and lots of lovely books and just as lovely people ready to help customers with orders and queries.

We've had plenty of highs and a fair few changes along the way.

As a UK–based independent bookseller, we've enjoyed making friends with lots of wonderful publishers, bestselling authors and lovely customers, and these relationships go from strength to strength.

We're proud to have done the odd amusing, and often absurd, thing to raise over £10 million for charities close to our heart too.

Traditional values, a close–knit family of staff,

and a mission to get the very best books to our diverse range of customers everywhere, all at amazingly affordable prices, will forever remain at the heart of the Book People.
