Bedtime Story Competition 2018

Do you know an aspiring young author?

Do you know a child aged between 5 and 11 years old who has a brilliant idea for a bedtime story on the theme of imagination and would love to see it published as a fantastic picture book? Book People, in association with Little Tiger Press and Save the Children UK are on the lookout for the nation's best storyteller!

The joy of bedtime stories...

Bedtime stories are an integral part of every childhood and can inspire a lifelong love of reading and writing. Not only that, reading plays a huge part in a child's development from an early age. Book People's Bedtime Story Competition highlights the benefits of reading to children, sharing stories and encouraging children to harness their creativity by writing their own exciting tales about imagination.

Stories about imagination

This year's Bedtime Story Competition theme is imagination, and we want to read stories about what can happen when you use your imagination, the power of imagination and even imaginary friends!

An opportunity of a lifetime

Opening 6th September, we're accepting 200-800 word stories across three age categories on the theme of imagination. Each category winner will receive a prize of £250 RRP worth of hand-picked books from Book People. The age categories are age 5-7, 8-9 and 10-11.

One overall winner from all 3 categories will have the chance to work with an editor from Little Tiger Press to help their story come to life. Illustrator Sara Sanchez will then create stunning artwork to accompany the text, and the book will be published in 2018 and sold exclusively at BookPeople.co.uk. At least 35% of proceeds from the winning book will go to Save the Children UK.

Meet Our Head Judge

Meet the Judge

We're thrilled to announce that double Olympic gold medallist rower, author and father-of-three Alex Gregory MBE is this year's Bedtime Story Competition head judge!

Alex, whose new book Dadventures is all about inspiring parents to use their imagination to have adventures as a family is excited to see how entrants use the theme of imagination in their bedtime stories.

Recently retired from rowing, Alex has spent 16 years competing and is walking away with five world championship titles, two Olympic gold medals, a world best time and is one of only three men in recent times to have won six major titles in consecutive years. Possessions are short term, experiences last a lifetime; is a philosophy he aims to live by as he and his family embark on more and more adventures together. Alex will be bringing his sense of adventure to judging this year's entries.

Alex will be selecting the winners for each of the three age categories from shortlisted entries, as well as choosing the overall winner who will have their bedtime story published! Alex will also be visiting one lucky school that enters 10 or more of their students' stories into the competition.
