Heidi by Johanna Spyri Puffin Classic edition -

First, this is the proper story of Heidi, by Johanna Spyri: only the introduction is by Eva Ibbotson. The story itself is so well known but I do want to recommend this particular edition: it's the best I've come across. Because Heidi was originally written in German, there are several English translations: this is by far the best - expressive, natural and easy on the ear. The illustrations are good too, much better than the cover suggests! Giving a lovely picture of the settings and characters of a century ago. There's also a bonus at the back of all the Puffin Classics - a section giving info about the author, places and things to think about from the protection of mountain landscapes to the science behind cheese-making! Devoured by daughter aged 10 - highly recommended.
