It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with a discovery of witches. When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels...

Exceptionally good read. -

A grown-up version of witches, vampires and daemons. Loved it, quite complex and extremely well written, I looked forward to going to bed to continue the adventure, sad when when I finished it.

Slow going and boring -

I really tried to enjoy this book, but I regret to say that I had to stop reading it halfway. Otherwise, I would have risked my love for reading. It was not a page-turning book for me. The book in my humble opinion is not well edited. There is an abuse of adverbs, and descriptions where it is not really necessary. I love visuals and descriptions, but in this book it just slowed the pace. So many descriptions about the tea, the river, and the constant reminding of Matthew's eyes, etc. Regarding characters, plot and storyline, the concept was good but it did not deliver. Diana is probably the most boring and annoying main character I ever read about. Matthew sounded more like a stalker and demanding than protective. It could have worked if I had felt some kind of emotion between the characters or chemistry, but I didn't. They said they loved each other, but I never felt it. Also the first encounters between them, like when he takes Diana to take breakfast is just slow and boring. The overall book is slow going and very little happens. I was bored to death by page 20 and exhaling by page 100. The plot also has many flaws and in many parts was not believable. I won't recommend this book to anyone, unfortunately, and I won't be reading more books from this author.

Oh so wonderful -

I wanted a book that would be easy to read for my holiday and I got it in spades this book. I had no idea about the genre, probably wouldn't have read if I had have known it was about vampires too - but am so glad that I did!! The love story is amazingly strong and the action very well paced. I'm so pleased to see that the sequel is now out.
