A bit different! -

I bought these for my son when he was 5 for Christmas last year (he is a bit old beyond his years though!). He was really anti-fiction books and his teachers and I were struggling to win him around to fiction. He managed to read most of them in one night (I found this out around 12.30am!) he was that intrigued, and he kept reading and re-reading them, as well as giving some to me to borrow as he thought I should read them too! I quite like them as well - I suppose it helps if you as an adult have a bit of an idea who everyone is to discuss the story with your child... but nothing you can't get from a bit of Jason and the Argonauts! Highly recommended, but yes most 5-year-olds would find this a bit much, best for a bit older, slightly strange bookish 5-year-olds like mine will love it.

"Brilliant but hard work" -

Would have scored 5 stars but these have been hard work for me to read (5-year-old daughter loves them, and laughing at my battle to pronounce the names and places). We have nearly finished book 12 and I've been instructed to start them again. So I guess that means they are good, also the 3-year-old brother starting to get into the stories too. Not too scary and an education for me too.

"Better for older children" -

I bought this collection as my son (6, with above average reading ability) was beginning to be interested in some myths and legends. However, good though these books undoubtedly are, I think this set is better suited to older children, when it comes to comprehension. The narrative style can be a little confusing, and with so many complex names, places and creatures to take in, I think a 5 year old would be rather daunted by these books. I've not even started them with my son yet, they're being kept for a couple of years' time.

"Great introduction" -

A fantastic series of books and a great introduction to the Greek Myths! The exciting stories are beautifully written and keep the reader completely enthralled. I bought this series for my 7 year-old daughter as our read together books. They captivated my daughter's imagination and are now being shared with her younger brother.

"Great introduction to chapter books" -

My son, 6 years, absolutely loves these. Because some of the names are quite tricky to read, I think it's best that they are shared reading books, however he is enjoying the stories so much he can't put them down.
