Three novels written by the Scottish historical author David Donachie, all featuring the unforgettable character John Pearce.

By the Mast Divided sees young firebrand Pearce illegally press-ganged on to a brutal life aboard the HMS Brilliant in 1793. He becomes the leader of an exclusive gun crew as HMS Brilliant chases a French privateer across the English Channel during an action-packed two weeks.

A Shot Rolling Ship finds Pearce pressed into the navy for the second time in a month, this time working aboard the HMS Griffin, a slow and over-crowded ship that sails the Channel in search of French privateers that prey on English merchant shipping. But Pearce has to save his ailing father from the dangers of revolutionary Paris and to do that, he must somehow leave the ship...

An Awkward Commission sees Pearce having to take ship and follow fellow Pelicans who have been shipped off to the Mediterranean. As he arrives at the port of Toulon, the tension between crews and captains intensifies and comes to a brilliant head when the HMS Brilliant is detached from the fleet and heads for North Africa, under the orders of Captain Horatio Nelson.

Three action-packed reads!

Excellent Read -

I read all three books and had no problem with the font size - in fact as I was travelling, the smaller lighter book suited me. Brilliant naval adventure stuffed with historical content and pathos if you're into standing proud before the mast or suffering below decks , this is for you. My only complaint is that 'The Book People' don't offer up the whole series to customers - they do this all the time and some times out of continium.PS - Specsavers have half price eye tests at the moment. Only Joking!

Reach for the magnifying glass -

Great price but very disappointed at the size of the print in all three books. There should be a print size shown for all books. It will be a struggle to read these books due to small print. I am housebound so unable to return them.

Very poor print presentation -

No matter how good a book, if the presentation is poor it cannot be good read. That is the problem with this set. Bargain price but the first book of the three is printed in tiny font with very small margins on a page. The second two books were much better presented and completely readable. In terms of readability and enjoyment the set only merits 2 out of 3 and a low Star rating because of this. (In fact I binned the first book as I didn't even think it merited a charity shop.) Book People strive to keep prices down but this "skimping" just went far too far.Beware when you order!
