The Jolley-Rogers - a pirate family, are moving to Dull-on-Sea, a quiet seaside town. Stopping to fix up their ship, this unusual family get the whole neighbourhood spreading rumours. Defying the grown-ups, Matilda from next door decides to become friends with the youngest pirate son. When the Jolley-Rogers leave, the town discovers they were wrong to assume the worst - the pirate clan have buried treasure in everyone's gardens (shown in a stunning double-gatefold). Matilda feels sad until she discovers her own treasure - an incredibly exciting new pen friend.
Loved the story but found the content was too confusing with too much detail for my children, they quickly lost interest. Definitely recommend for older children around 5+.
Lovely book. Great gift -
Bought this book for a friend's 3-year-old and he loved it. My son of 4 also fell in love with the book and I have had to make sure that Santa remembers to get one for his stocking. The illustrations are brilliant and whilst the text is easy enough to be understood by a younger child it also has enough length and substance to be enjoyed by a 4-year-old. My son has generally moved on to chapter books for his bedtime story but he still loves a picture book and this one really captured his imagination. This book would make a lovely present for 3 & 4 year olds - so at this price I reccomend buying a few to put away for the many birthday parties that your child is likely to be invited to over the coming year.
The Pirates Next Door -
I read this book the other night whilst babysitting. It's brilliant and I can't wait to babysit at that house again so I can read it again. I'm going to ask my boss at the nursery where I work if we can buy it to read the kids there. Great rhyming text, funny bits and as the previous reviewer said a great moral to the story!
I first thought this book might be too grown up for my two-year-old but he adores it! It's a great book and has a nice moral about not prejudging people who are different. Really though the illustrations make it and my little boy loves the big pull out at the end. A must for any little one.
