This novel, originally serialized in a magazine, must be the most famous family drama in print. It describes the family life of the four sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March, who live on the East Coast of the USA and who have fallen on hard times. With their father away fighting in the Civil War, the girls need to be strong and inventive. I loved finding out how different the four sisters, who range in age from 12 to 16, are: the oldest sister, Meg, is like a mother to the younger ones; Jo is an adventurous tomboy; Beth, is shy and quiet; and Amy, is spoilt but loving. The book describes the daily family chores and occasional squabbles, their mother Marmee's struggle to feed them, Jo's friendship with the boy next door called Laurie, and much more. It's unbelievable that Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy are book characters who are more than 150 years old as they are described in such a fresh and interesting way and they often behave just like my friends and I would! There is a glossary at the end of the book to explain words that are no longer in fashion, which is helpful. I also loved reading this family saga and also the author file, 'Who's Who' and questions at the end of this edition of the book.
