A poignant book that made all of us laugh and cry in equal measure, R.J. Palacio's Wonder is told using different voices but at its centre is the honest and courageous character of 10-year-old August, a boy who was born with a severe facial disfigurement.

August is about to start middle school after being home-schooled by his mum for years. The challenge is a tough one for someone like August and he has to tackle bullies and childish cruelty in his journey. But August's resilience, humour and bravery really shine through, making this an uplifting novel that will linger in the reader's thoughts for a long time to come.

Every human tweenager onwards needs to read this book. -

This is the sort of book that stays with you when you've read it, and it's for tweenagers and adults alike. I completely agree with and cannot really add much to the Red House review - it is about resilience, bravery .(..and being kinder than necessary).

It handles human behaviours and I think it encourages us to be better people, but it's not a preachy book, it's just a darned good story. It made me crumple, cry, feel tender, relieved and encouraged. (The follow-up book is also good).

Thought-provoking -

I bought this for my daughter as she needs it for English in Year 7. Having already read it whilst in Year 6, she told me that I should read it as it's very good. I have just finished reading it, finding it very hard to put down. It was a compelling read, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and just brilliant.

She found it amusing just how upsetting I found it at times. I think it's a good choice for Year 6+ to read as a class as it will bring great discussions.

Heart-warming -

I read this book in year 7 because everyone was talking about it. I love it and it was amazing.

Amazing -

'Wonder' follows the story of August, or Auggie for short. He's 10, has been home-schooled all his life until now and... has a facial abnormality. At his new school, he faces challenges and at his class' camping trip, his courage is tested to the limit. The story is told in different viewpoints, from Auggie's to his sister's boyfriend's, which I think is good because you get to know the different character's personalities. Overall, I think this is an AMAZING book and would definitely recommend it to any children- or even adults!- that like books that make them cry, laugh and become addicted. 5/5
