When his brother, the King, is killed in battle, Prince Redrought must rally his people and learn to defend the tiny country agaist supernatural invaders \- werewolves, vampires and zombies. Redrought must take the fight to enemy territory, The-Land-of-the-Ghosts, and it's there he will fall or stand for ever in the legends of the Icemark as King Redrought Athelstan Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, Bear of the North.
This book is about a prince who comes to the throne when his brother dies at the hands of vampires, werewolves and other supernatural invaders of his tiny kingdom, the Icemark. He must step up, and rally his people to defend themselves. I really enjoyed the plot of this book and the imagination that went into making it. I like how the author slots in humour in the darkest times, like when their Vampiric Majesties are watching a victorious battle, and talking about how foolish the human king is, when actually they have no tactical experience and never listen to their advisors and generals. Prince Redrought is such a good character because they don't make him perfect and good looking. Instead, they make him rather ugly and awkward, but a character you can support all through the book. I would definitely recommend this to boys and girls older than 9, because the book can get a little violent in the heat of battle!
