Divergent (Paperback)

Veronica Roth

11 years +

The world has changed and the future citizens of Chicago are forced to live in a society that has divided itself into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amith (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent).

When children turn 16, they are given an aptitude test which will decide which faction they should belong to. As Tris approaches this landmark occasion, she is forced to make a terrible decision and leaves her family behind as she searches for where she truly belongs. Shocked by the brutality of her faction, she quickly comes to realise she can trust no one, but also finds herself drawn to a boy who seems to threaten and protect her... Pacy and electrifying, you'll be hooked throughout!

With the hit film adaptation, starring The Fault in Our Stars' Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, becoming one of 2014's highest grossing films, now is the right time to read Queen of Teen 2014 nominee Veronica Roth's Divergent - especially as sequel Insurgent will be in cinemas come 2015!

Beatrice Prior (Tris) lives in a society were everyone is divided into five factions. Abnegation who value selflessness (and where Beatrice is currently from), Dauntless who value bravery and fearlessness, Erudite who value knowledge, Amity who value kindness and are always smiling and Candor who value honesty. When citizens reach the age of 16 they must choose which faction they want to belong to, once a decision has been made, it cannot be reversed. Tris will soon be 16, and with choosing day looming ahead in the near future, everyone is given an Aptitude Test, to give them an idea of where they should go. Only Tris's results are a bit, well, different... And it could kill her. Divergent was definitely a riveting tale that had me rapidly flipping the pages in a frenzy! I was soon drawn into Beatrice's world, cheering her on one minute, and crying with her the next, and with small, intricate plot points weaved into the main storyline, you can't go wrong with Divergent.

Beatrice Prior is on the brink of a decision that will change her life of self denial forever. Torn between staying with her family and choosing what she really wants, Tris is forced to make a fast decision. How will she overcome the harsh trials of initiation? Set in a dystopian world divided into five factions based on personal qualities, Divergent is an action packed novel aimed at people 12-15 years of age. It is set in an overgrown version of Chicago, America. It was an easy book to read with a gripping plot. I would rate it 5 out of 5 and would like to read more books by Veronica Roth.

Divergent is set in a dystopian future where society is split into five factions - Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity and Erudite. When children turn sixteen they are tested to see which faction they are most likely to belong, if they fit into more than one faction then they are called a divergent. The main character is Tris, who is a divergent, grew up in the selfless faction of Abnegation and longs to be part of the more violent and unrestricted faction of Dauntless, but this also means she will have to leave her family forever. Divergent is a great read and it follows Tris's compelling and action-packed journey as she leaves her old life behind to go through the brutal initiations of her new faction of Dauntless. Tris is a fantastic heroine like Katniss from The Hunger Games and I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed The Hunger Games.
