It's bedtime in the land of ice and snow. "Night, night," says Bib's mummy. "Sleep tight," says Bib's daddy. But Bib has a better plan. "Please," says Bib, "can I have a story? The one about dragons." And so begins the heartwarming tale of a dragon in need of an egg and an abandoned egg in need of a mummy. It seems like the perfect fit, but what happens when that egg hatches and the little baby doesn't look like all the other dragons (in fact, he looks remarkably like a penguin)? Of course, his mummy loves him no matter what. But the other babies aren't so sure. Little do they know that being different can be good and soon their little feathered friend is saving the day.

My son has insisted we read this book at bedtime everyday for a week! That is testament enough how much he has enjoyed it. The story is full with age appropriate references to friendship, empathy and unconditional love. It teaches children that being different is ok and given that it mixed these messages with dragons and fire it easily captured my boy's ever growing imagination. The first we have read of this author but a firm favourite on the shelf.

Dragon loves Penguin is a beautifully illustrated story about a dragon who raises a penguin. Running through the story is the theme that sometimes bad things happen for a reason. It takes bullying and being an outcast to show that without sadness, good things could not have happened. It gives an answer to why bad/sad things happen to good people that young children can understand. It also emphasises love despite differences. Thealie loves this book and we read it most nights. The way the book is narrated - a mother reading her child a bedtime story - is warming and the text itself is artistic inserted in to full page illustrations with no loss of legibility in any instant except on page 26 (the colour background is to dark for dyslexic reading aids). Thealie and I give this book 5 out of 5.
