Mrs Vole the vet has one son, two daughters, three cats, four dogs and no husband. Really, she has everything she needs and she works very hard - no job is too big, too small or too high - but her children think that what she really needs is a boyfriend! It is a hilarious Happy Families picture book from master storyteller, Allan Ahlberg.
We bought this book as we incorrectly assumed this might be a story about animals and a vet... a vet being specifically linked to animals through their workplace. After considering throwing it away, instead it has been passed round social circles of adults to see whether our disgust was shared... it was.
This is an inappropriate story for any five year old, boy or girl, unless you want said boy to grow up feeling they must earn money in order to be wanted or unless you want said girl to feel she can accomplish anything in life, even a veterinary degree, but without a husband with a big wallet is thus unfulfilled in life.
Perhaps the author is indeed a master storyteller, the problem is that the story being told is not one of happy families, but shallowness and vanity. Its principles are backwards. I genuinely cannot understand its appeal to anyone.
